I read that book!

I read tons of Nancy Drew books…

but I’m pretty sure I remember this one because I not only read the library edition, somewhat newer than this one, but I also bought a copy in an inexpensive hardback format…

I vaguely remember the picture on the cover, with a clock in it.

Memorable partly because I rarely bought hardback books because sometimes I had to leave them when we got transferred.

The thing I remember is that there were some racist elements in the library book, that were somewhat edited out in my late 1950’s version.

Like at one point someone is referred to as a “darkie” in the old book, and I think it was changed to “Negro”.

By now that’s no doubt edited as well.

I think this is also the one where Nancy’s friend Georgie gives her fashion advice that I always remembered, even though it’s more suitable for 1930s dresses than the clothes I wore as a child in the 50s.

I read almost every juvenile book series I could get my hands on….

Every Nancy Drew, most in several editions, due to checking them out out of the library over and over.

Every Hardy Boys, most if not every Tom Swift, Cherry Ames (a nurse)…

a lot of English ones, cos that’s what we got in Libya, including Sue Barton(another nurse, and I may have switched their names) a series I loved about ballerinas, and almost everything by Enid Blyton.

She (or it may be a pseudonym for several people) wrote The Bobsey Twins, the Famous Five, and The Secret Seven.

I also read the whole series of Mary Poppins, Dr. Doolittle, and Little House on the Prairie, in the Woods, etc.

Plus lots I can’t think of right now.

The librarian in one place had to give me written permission to check out more than the allowed 4 books a week.

As an adult I collected forgotten series books, and read all the ones I found, though they were meant for preteens… including WWI era gems like The Radio Boys, the Girl Flyers and The Movie Girls.

Plus some adult mysteries, but mostly only vintage ones. I love Dashiell Hammet.

What’s strange is that I barely read any fiction any more, and no modern mysteries.

i read somewhere (a million years ago) that the fellow who wrote the hardy boys also wrote the nancy drew mysteries also.

Wow, really! I guess it makes sense. Hardy Boys were the boy equivalent of Nancy Drew. But how could one author wield so much power over young minds?

I guess you mean at the top of the page, not a “like” on a comment?

That’s the only place I’ve seen it, anyway, and I’ve been curious about it too, cos I thought it went to some unknown (to me) website to share reviews or something.

But recently, I clicked it, just to see, and all it did was show me the usual list of links, just like they display more openly on GoComics, to sites like Twitter, Facebook, various email sites, etc.

I clicked Gmail, as a test, and it opened a new message with a link to Cleo and Company already pasted in. It wasn’t addressed to anybody.

So saying yes doesn’t actually do anything, except give you the opportunity to post a link in your usual places.

My internet is notoriously slow…

Maybe some of you see those choices without clicking “yes”, but I don’t.

Son of a gun!!

It’s Pun Crazy!

Thanks for requesting it, Dennis!

That was a quick turnaround, wasn’t it?

….

Wow, I remember shooting this film.

Not literally, of course.

Unlike Cleo, I’m not allowed to have guns.

I’m barely allowed to have puns.

Oh come on… I’ve heard some murmers out there… don’t think I’m not listening.

….

What a cool poster…. well, there are a lot of cool posters here… I mean, all of you guys….

But I’m referring to Stel’s movie poster

It’s kind of a B-movie…. And I don’t just mean “Basset-movie”.

I’d never heard of my costars.

But then, I’m not exactly one of the top guns in the echelons of basset movie stars, myself…. even though I did have a big hit as a puppy…. er, child.

They turned out to be a great group, though…. friendly, fun to play with, but serious when the cameras rolled.

I was happy when a famous basset film critic (who shall remain nameless) said “This movie has legs.”

But it turned out that he was talking about mine.
Cos, you know, they’re long… for a basset hound.

Speaking of my legs… y’know, Stel, when you shot that photo, I didn’t know my skirt was slit so high. How embarrassing. Thigh….

Plus, that supposedly form fitting blouse was kind of a bust.

And my walk was a bit wobbly in those shoes. I’d never learned to heel.

And I see you also posted a shot of my hotel room on location…

But I swear that’s not my cigarette…

I don’t smoke… only my pistols smoke.

….

I’m not trying to skirt the issue…

But I gotta split for a while…

I have to powder my nose.

No, for real, before Montana Lady sees it.

Tonight, my big night, of all times, this site was acting a little crazy.

I never log out, cos nobody else uses my devices, but every so often, it makes me log in again.

When I got here, it said I was logged in, so I wrote a comment, which posted fine.

Then I wrote my long comment about the film… but I got a message saying some of the comment field was “invalid”.

On most sites that would mean you’re trying to post characters the site doesn’t recognize…

Some have only a short list of acceptable “special characters” and others won’t post. But WordPress is generally pretty open to them… And I didn’t see anything in my comment but normal letters.

I copied my comment, refreshed, pasted, reposted… Same deal.

About my third page refresh, I saw that I was logged out.

So I logged back in, and the same thing happened. I pasted my comment back in, hit “post comment” … Got the same message.

Refreshed the page, and I was logged out again.

I had to do it about three times before it kept me logged in long enough to post!

Luckily, it seems to be staying that way🤞… Knock wood and fingers crossed.

I’m just sharing this in case anybody else sees that message.

If something is “invalid” in your comment … you might just be logged off.
