That’s not a smiley smile…. that’s a smile that says “Honest Mom, I wouldn’t dream of getting into your picnic basket… and by the way I love you.”

The rolling pin she’s holding is a nice touch.

Yes…. This is Buster and Natalie (Talmadge) Keaton, posing on their wedding day, in 1921.

Besides the ball and chain, notice her large rolling pin…. standard issue for wives in silent comedies.

She obviously had a sense of humor.

I guess it wasn’t enough, though…. from what I read, she also had quite a taste for the finer things, and for spending his money on them.

They divorced a few years later.
He married twice more, in his life.

Oh!

I just got it!
I think.

There’s still part of it that’s confusing…. but….

isn’t it….
A top view of a woman’s torso, bent over, with her hair brushed out?

The “nostrils” are her neck and shoulders.

She seems to be sitting in white liquid of some kind … That’s what’s confusing.

I would say that:
She’s leaning through a hole in the wall which is covered with a white fabric because her hair must be pointing downwards.

Could be….

I thought…

that somebody had brushed it out flat, on a surface.
But yeah, maybe it’s hanging down.

It looks like she’s standing hugging her knees.
That bit of white at the top of the “nose” is her hips. She’s wearing white pants.

They don’t get slaughtered here but shot by a hired huntsman – instant death, no stress. The others don’t panic either.

Mom got chased by a moose once. No joke. Went out in a field with a camera to photograph the moose, and didn’t realize there was a calf…behind Mom. Never saw her run so fast in her life.

A tray of (obviously) desserts at a sidewalk cafe in Naples.
Sadly, you’re supposed to choose one.

One? Really?

Let’s see… I make it eleven slices, but three seem to be duplicates…
So… eight kinds?

Maybe eating two isn’t piggy?
And maybe I could come back with a mustache on and…. nah, that’ll never work.

Maybe four of us could each order two, and cut them up?
Sigh…. I think they frown on that in Italy.

I know! I’ll just have to stay for 8 days!

Better make it 30… I’m sure there are other restaurants and bakeries. 🙂

Two that are the same have Oreos halves on top.
Not fake ones or Italian copycat ones… I looked quite closely.

I guess Oreos are everywhere.

But they’re the dark chocolate ones so I guess I have to try them anyway. It’s Naples… they couldn’t not be good.

Why should they frown?
When we go to Hofbräuhaus (Munich) with Korean friends, the staff brings extra plates that we can share the different meals. Often without being asked.
And it’s no problem usually to share anywhere else. Just ask for extra plates, bowls, cutlery etc.

I’ve seen that advice in articles and YouTube videos that talk about eating in Italy.

They brought it up… obviously I wasnt asking about it.

I’ve never been, so of course I don’t know… That’s why I said “I think” instead of stating it as fact.

I’m just reporting on what I’ve read or seen…. and trying to be somewhat amusing.

Thanks… And yeah, I’ve seen plenty of recipes for them, but I’ve never made them, or even tasted homemade ones.

I don’t really bake any more, and the recipes call for Golden Syrup, which we don’t have over here. (Though I suppose you can get anything online nowadays, if you’re able to pay the price.)

That article has a substitution, made of molasses and honey… I wonder whether it really tastes the same.

The Anzac biscuits I’ve had are commercial ones, sold as a fundraiser by IIRC an Australian historical society, once a year… which I only found at one import store…. or occasionally, if I was lucky, at the discount grocery, after the season.

I’ve never seen another brand here, either, though I know there are some.

Even though I’m a total chocoholic, and they have none, they were some of the best cookies I’ve ever had.

Did you ever go back to a restaurant, maybe someplace you really liked, and everything seemed just a bit different?

Maybe the salad isn’t quite the same, or the moo shu pork tastes a wee bit more like shoe and less like pork.

Or maybe it’s just the decor… Or who knows, maybe everything is better.

I think the ladies in this Hopper painting are having that sort of experience. Over cups of tea, they’re discussing the differences.

And you can see them! Nine. There are nine differences between their moments in time.

I’m sure you can find them…. and compare with what I found….

The one

I missed,
the sugar bowl,
I still can’t see the difference.
Amended: I failed to see that it had been slightly
moved
on the table.
I kept looking for a change in size.

Yeah, a couple of perfect voices. Some performers are great because of the song, some because of the singer.

Same.

My family, when we were all still around, singing happy birthday around a cake, was an experience that visitors described as…. well, no, they were usually too polite to describe it, though their faces unwittingly told a story.

(But I have to say that I’d love to be able to hear it again.)
