now, i wonder why Cleo is setting out leprechaun bait? could it have something to do with St. Paddy’s Day?

She’s after that legendary pot of gold – but I doubt any decent leprechaun will tell her its location after that. Some other kind of pot rather.
Maybe she’d better watch “Finian’s Rainbow” instead.

I see a few problems with Cleo’s trap…. aside from the obvious ones, like catching the mail… erperson.

For one… look at all that space!

Leprechauns are wily. And tiny.

….

No leprechaun worth his salt… or his gold… is going to stand anywhere near that outer ring of teeth.

He could scrunch down close to the bowl and not be touched… for that matter, so could a chipmunk, if one were smart enough.

Better yet, he could reach over the hinge from the back, and be outside the action.

….

But mostly… it’s the bait.

I’ve seen so-called “leprechaun bait.”

Maybe Cleo knows more about what really attracts leprechauns.

But the recipes I’ve read call for pretzels, M&Ms, and cereal, including Corn Chex and “Lucky Charms”… which is puffy corn bits mixed with little chewy dried out marshmallow shapes.

The whole thing is usually drizzled with melted white chocolate or some other sticky sweet coating.

Yuck.

Look. Leprechauns are not cute and cuddly.

They’re tough old guys, who live in the woods.

They eat moss, and mushrooms, and probably cook up stray wildlife into Irish stew… I’m not sure.

But I am sure they’re not looking for stale green marshmallow bits…

and that they prefer their grain distilled, the higher the proof, the better.

Porridge with a decent piece of butter on top (that’s important; otherwise they’d probably kill your cow according to “Das große Buch der Zwerge”).
We’ve got two bottles of Jameson’s right here – intended for my husband’s birthday gathering (only three to five guests) this Saturday (he’ll turn 60). If any Leprechauns want to attend even before that, they’d be welcome as long as they don’t turn our cat into Brunswick stew. There will be enough other food.
I promise not to trap him, that wouldn’t be very hospitable. Our guests stay longer than they previously intended anyway. Voluntarily.

Aaahhh.. a subject for scientific research.

You could be right… after all, I’m sure it’s a respected book.

But doesn’t “Zwerge” mean “Dwarves”?

The question is, are leprechauns dwarves?

I’ve read that they’re not related to dwarves or gnomes, but instead to fairies or elves… though to me, they do look more like Norse gnomes.

In any case, I’d think the Jameson’s would be more likely to lure them than the oatmeal, with or without butter…. being much higher proof.

Just be careful they don’t drink it all!

That’s only the title, but the book really shows all the differences and the common misunderstandings.
