Lo, these many moons ago, I was headed for New Mexico. Had spent the night in Dodge City, because, ADVENTURES. I had flipped a coin and decided to take the Southwest route, 56 and 160 into Trinidad, CO., then south across Raton (Mouse) Pass.
Half-hour across the prairie (on a motorcycle), I hit a dust storm that was sanding the lens off my goggles. Managed to survive that, and rode on into a sunny, if breezy day.
Now mind you. I had been the I-70 route into Colorado a couple years before. Long about Limon, ya start to see a smudge on the horizon that starts to look like clouds. Eventually: “Oh, look. They are mountains.”
So. I’m weaving through the mesas, long about Pritchett/Utleyville. (I need to go back sometime, just to find those mesas). NO stereo on the bike at that time, so I’m singing away, song about Colorado.
You come aross the prairie, And there before your eyes, You see those Rocky Mountain peaks, Rising up to the skys.
I swear to dog, just as I’m belting out that line, I round the shoulder of the last mesa and crest the ridge. BOOM! MOUNTAINS!
Still a few miles off, and not that majestic, but still… Good thing there was no traffic, because I stopped in the middle of the road and just stared for a bit.
Sounds like a great adventure. I lived in New Mexico for a year. The desert can be quite beautiful and ever-changing. The mesas and mountains are so picturesque. Living there gave me a great appreciation for cacti ~ I fell in love with the Ocotillo cactus. They had valleys of them and the Saguaros. I also went up Pike’s Peak in Colorado. We were so high that it was hard to breathe, but the scenery was absolutely amazing. I’m picturing you on your mototcycle, singing away! I’ll never get back there again, but I hope you do.
It’s like the foothills are eliminated and the mountain peaks are magnified to fill the space, so they suddenly rise from the flat land in a close-up view.
It reminds me of spooky ghosts jumping out at you on a fun house ride… unexpectedly close and large.
I don’t know what part of Philadelphia you live in but my Philly born & raised mom would never put peppers on a Cheese steak. I also never saw them with peppers in any of my my visits to the city of brotherly love.
So, cheese steak -yes. Philly Cheese steak- absolutely not.
.
Is that you, Nighthawks??
My thought exactly!!!
my thoughts too.
sorry to say, even though I’m maybe 3-4 hours away from being this close,
I’ve never had the privilege

There used to be a little store just like this down the street from my Dad’s house in Santa Ana. Neat picture!

WOW!!
Imagine living with that in your back yard!
This is an IMAGINARY LANDSCAPE Only the Alps are real.
I could probably find a similar real landscape around Rosedale BC where the Fraser Valley ends with a bump against the coast mountains…

OH, NO!
It’s upside down. They’ll fall out.
They all have quite the expressions!
It’s our same trio… this photo was taken before the the ones posted last week(?)
The little spotted dachshund is still a pup here, and the other two aren’t feeling quite welcoming yet.
They got over it by the time we saw all three cuddled up sleeping, and the pic where they and a pal are doing a bit of house
wreck…. er… redecorating.Poor Cleo; that’s probably going to leave stains on her gown. What do you think was in that kettle, anyway? Gruel? Krusty (TM) brand imitation gruel?
Clam chowder, by the color… New England style, luckily for her dress, not Manhattan.
national clam chowder day???
Must be the soup kettle drum.
Dinner and show!
Does the soup come with a drum roll?
Only a half-baked one.
Not Cleo’s fault! She was set up with a fake drum!
Well, she wanted to make a big splash.
LOL
LOVE monty python! thanks, tigressy.
I was in Spamalot just last year. Not in the chorus, but I sang from the wings.

How ’bout onions?
I love onions, but again, true Philadelphia Cheese Steaks (from back in the day) – No onions either.
maybe this was the Italian version?
As close as “Cheap Thrills…” comes.
That’s a just another variety of croque monsieur.
well, i thought cleo handled herself rather well. there’s not a bazooka in her carrying case!
Now that’s a fine kettle of fish (or chowda or something).
