I remember, too, the time I first realized that her name, Gale Storm, was a play on words! Just like when I learned that Vermont meant Green Mountain! Seems obvious, of course, now…..but, when you’re nine or ten, it blew my mind!!
I love Mark Knopfler’s spare guitar style. It doesn’t try to show off or scream out, “Look at me, I can play the guitar!”, it just does an excellent job of underscoring each particular song.
BTW, Arfside……I was sorry to learn of the difficult challenge you are facing. I, too, was faced with taking care of my mom, who had Alzheimer’s, along with my dad (who had chronic renal failure and 2 strokes) at home for many years. It’s sad, frustrating, and so hard……but, love helps so much.
I wish you continued strength and love and so hope that someday soon, they will find a cure for this devastating disease.
We are here for you, even to just provide a little respite during your day.
Thanks. She’s in the Biogen trial that was given FDA permission to restart because it was found (after closing down) that the high dosage seemed to be working. A pacemaker added last year kept her out of the restart until now, due to the strict requirements for stopping and restarting the pacemaker in order to do the MRI testing. She just had her readmittance MRI today, and will be able to restart the monthly infusions soon. With any luck, this trial will help our children and grandchildren, as well as everybody else to finally be able to slow or stop this disease. It’s fascinating to learn what they know (and don’t know) about the disease.
Right? I have checked out a lot of the Uptown Funk videos, since that song just makes me happy to listen to it. When I came across this one last night, it was one of the best compilations that I had seen, quickly taking over the spot that “Let’s Dance” has held on my playlist for the past 7 years!
(I’m glad that they kept Jimmy Cagney and also the Nicholas Brothers in both videos! The Nicholas Brothers’ splits down the stairsteps are amazing to watch!!)
Progress summary (NOT spoilers):
Top row – Good (#2 took longest, so it’s my favorite)
2nd row – #5 is a total mystery, good on the other 3
Bottom – #9-10 good, 11 probably wrong, #12 no answer
1) short circuit
2) Lie in wait
3) break dancing
4) Iron Maiden (Apparently the torture device is a figment of someone’s imagination.)
5) ??
6) I’m big on family?
7) pie in the sky
8) nickel back
9) Up in arms
10) to easy
11) Left it undone?
12) shortage (a stretch / but it fits)
#1 short circuit
#3 ribbon dancing
#4 Iron Maiden
#6 Bob’s your uncle
#7 Pie in the sky
#8 up in arms
#11 incomplete action (grammar) or endless action
#12 shortage
Those puzzles aren’t that far-fetched and real groaners sometimes.
I made it to second best solver of the day last night and think my #11 and #12 (my second guess is the same as yours btw, but I tend more to my first one) are correct.
I think so, anyway (easier to follow threads, that is)……we’ll see if we all feel the same about it next week! I’m not so keen on the member info being moved over to the right side of the user, but maybe I’ll get used to it……
At first I didn’t like that either but now I realize that with that left side clutter tucked out of the way, it’s easier to see the “hierarchy” of the comments.
The left side borders are sort of cleaner and more visible.
Remember that today is “Census Day,” and StatsCan has gone back to “mandatory.”
Fortunately, I got the short form for the first time in ages.
I don’t know what, if it exists, the American long form is like, but the Canadian one pretty much gets down to “How many times a day do you go to the bathroom and what do you do each time?”
I know how to get back at them. Comply. In excruciating detail. Omit NOTHING. Offer to send samples via overnight mail if they would like some. Maybe even a couple of “freebies.”
Thank you, ML! I posted it for a short while last week, at the end of the page for “It happens every Spring”, but both NH and Susan convinced me to feature it today. I’m glad I did!
this photo goes back even further when ZaSu was a silent film star in the ’20s.
she later, as was noted above, played a character in ‘The Gale Storm Show’–
‘Old Susanna’
You could have chosen much worse. I have no memory of her looks whatsoever, perhaps because our family did not live in the USA in the 1950’s. But her stage name was undeniably catchy. I just figured she was supposed to be, in some way, “exotic.”
‘We’ just made the best Chocolate Banana Walnut bread! Yum! I was able to pull all the ingredients and MMM did all the ‘stirring’. My right had doesn’t work & I’m right handed.
I want to thank all of you for your good wishes in yesterday’s conversation. You are all my ‘treasures’! xoxo
I did not see your news yesterday. What a bummer! So sorry that you have to deal with this. Glad you have your Mountain Man/ Rocket Scientist to lean on.
Oh, ML……I missed your news on yesterday’s page, although you did confide in me earlier. Again, it’s so distressing, yet, in this day and age, there’s so much more hope for more helpful therapies and maybe even cures for so many difficult illnesses.
You’re so very lucky to have Your Mountain Man (and, Rocket Scientist, to borrow Dennis’s words) to love, help and support you. And, your bright and optimistic outlook counts for so much.
You are our treasure, as well, and we all are here to back you up and wish you the best possible outcome… always!
I, too, did not see your post yesterday. I’m so sorry you had to get that news. And as Stel said, these days there is hope for a cure. This is one of those they are doing a lot of research on. Hopefully soon ~ a cure. Keep your spirits up and live your best life. We are all here for you!!!

[In the 1927 black and white movie photo above, I believe they are from L>R: Wallace Beery, Sterling Holloway and Ford Sterling.]
This..

…confirms your belief. 😎
Thanks for double-checking, Alexi!

I remember her on the Gale Storm Show…
ah, Gale Storm…..she had two tv series in the 50’s —
My Little Margie and Oh Susanna
I remember, too, the time I first realized that her name, Gale Storm, was a play on words! Just like when I learned that Vermont meant Green Mountain! Seems obvious, of course, now…..but, when you’re nine or ten, it blew my mind!!
Same with Rip Torn.
Yep, me, too!
Thanks for the additional info. I was always fascinated by the name, ZaSu, and thought it was just so cool.
It was the middle of her real name…
Eliza Susan.
Yes. I didn’t make that clear that I was referring to finding out the source of her name in the Wikipedia article that Happy provided.
When I was little, before I had totally picked up societal standards of beauty, I thought Zazu Pitts in old movies was absolutely beautiful…
I think she WAS considered beautiful way back when, but in a odd way.
I loved her huge eyes.
When my mother told me that was the same person on the Gale Storm show I could hardly believe it.
I love Mark Knopfler’s spare guitar style. It doesn’t try to show off or scream out, “Look at me, I can play the guitar!”, it just does an excellent job of underscoring each particular song.
Dire Straits…one of my favorite groups. Glad you enjoyed the selection!

Wow! You folks are outstanding!!!
I liked all the baseball videos, but Uptown Funk was my favorite.
Right? I have checked out a lot of the Uptown Funk videos, since that song just makes me happy to listen to it. When I came across this one last night, it was one of the best compilations that I had seen, quickly taking over the spot that “Let’s Dance” has held on my playlist for the past 7 years!

Thanks for the reminder about our great treasures!
This one is also a lot of fun.
The recitation of Casey at the Bat was outstanding.
I checked out quite a few before deciding that that was the best one, in my estimation. The illustrations alone were terrific!
A very timely and vibrant vintage poster.
Thanks so much, LM!! I appreciate it!

One unknown and two uncertain
2) Lie in wait
3) break dancing
4) Iron Maiden (Apparently the torture device is a figment of someone’s imagination.)
5) ??
6) I’m big on family?
7) pie in the sky

I find it actually helps to read the puzzle. Don’t you? 😏
Your #3 is correct.
Missing in action :: (Missing-n action)
I think that’s right!
Not a great clue but the best answer, at last so far.
Shorts out (electrical) (as in looking out between the shorts)
#1 short circuit
#3 ribbon dancing
#4 Iron Maiden
#6 Bob’s your uncle
#7 Pie in the sky
#8 up in arms
#11 incomplete action (grammar) or endless action
#12 shortage
I’m really late with this but can’t resist posting anyway…
1. Short circuit
2. Lie in wait
3. Line dancing?
First I thought break dancing but it doesn’t look broken.
4. Iron Maiden (band)
5. ?
6. Bob’s your uncle
7. Pie in the sky
8. Nickelback (band)
9. Up in arms
10. Too easy
11. Maybe Endless action… But that’s not an expression so ??
12. Short back and sides. (What you tell the barber for a traditional men’s haircut)
Now I get to read everybody else’s and see if anybody got anything for #5.
Nope…. nobody’s got anything for #5.
I really think baconboy is correct for #11, and I am correct for #12, even though no one else gave those answers.
Those puzzles aren’t that far-fetched and real groaners sometimes.
I made it to second best solver of the day last night and think my #11 and #12 (my second guess is the same as yours btw, but I tend more to my first one) are correct.
I think your #12 is the winner there! Totally makes sense now!
,..
did something change? looks different, member status and follow icon are all moved?
I noticed the framing
we changed the format, opting for something different.
Stel claims the framing makes it easier to follow threads
I agree. If you want to see if there are any new comments, you can only go by the time. This makes it easier. I like it!
Yayy! There’s one pro vote!
Add mine.
I think so, anyway (easier to follow threads, that is)……we’ll see if we all feel the same about it next week! I’m not so keen on the member info being moved over to the right side of the user, but maybe I’ll get used to it……

all your hard work is showing!
Good morning, Cleo and baseball phans!
Another Class A, Number One, Stel-lar old timey movie poster upgrade by our resident artiste of an original poster that sold for $9,725.00 in 2018.
National Eat What You Want Day.
Y’all pig out. (((((HuGz!)))))
Again, thanks for your kind words, Plods!
Three cheers for whoever thought that one up!
and the other two
Golden Earring “Twilight-Zone”
Warning! Warning! Warning!
Women have bumpy things, and there are two that are briefly uncovered in this video.
You have been warned!
(The video is actually shot for some comic effect; successfully too.)
If you remember Golden Earring’s other big hit, “Radar Love,” This is a link to Brenda Lee’s “forgotten” song.
Brenda Lee: “Coming on Strong”
P.S.
I don’t remember it.
I didn’t think I knew that song, until it started to play. Guess I never paid enough attention.
I definitely didn’t know Brenda Lee’s “Coming on Strong”, but it wasn’t too bad at all!
To my fellow Canadians
Remember that today is “Census Day,” and StatsCan has gone back to “mandatory.”
Fortunately, I got the short form for the first time in ages.
I don’t know what, if it exists, the American long form is like, but the Canadian one pretty much gets down to “How many times a day do you go to the bathroom and what do you do each time?”

ah, remember this one? first posted in June, 2014
And, it happens to me all the time, too.
Oh! And, it happens to me, as well!
Ahh…..Nighthawks…..one of my favorites! It’s still sooooo funny!!
It happens to everyone. What gets worse is the frequency.
Best line of the comic goes to Cleo.
Beautifully done poster. Just love all the names. The expressions are perfect. Let’s play ball!!
Thank you, thank you, PC!! I didn’t know until last night that it was from 1927! Almost a hundred years ago! Hard to believe…
Loved the video of the Old Dancing Stars!!! So many favorite scenes.
Thanks for putting it on, Stel.
Totally my pleasure, ML! I love it, too!
I’ll echo PerkyCat……this is a great poster, Stel. Love the expressions on the Basset Players’ faces.
Thank you, ML! I posted it for a short while last week, at the end of the page for “It happens every Spring”, but both NH and Susan convinced me to feature it today. I’m glad I did!
Good choice!
Good morning Balladeers, ((((( Plods))))) and Miss Susan.
I am dating myself here, “Sasu Pittbull” AKA Zasu Pitts. Anybody remember her?
this photo goes back even further when ZaSu was a silent film star in the ’20s.
she later, as was noted above, played a character in ‘The Gale Storm Show’–
‘Old Susanna’
THAT’S the face I was talking about earlier.
I don’t remember how I saw those old movies… Maybe silent films were shown on TV.
Also my aunt had saved stacks of old movie magazines.
…
At 5 or so I didn’t understand.that movies and magazines could be out of date.
I only remember I wanted to look like Zasu Pitts.
You could have chosen much worse. I have no memory of her looks whatsoever, perhaps because our family did not live in the USA in the 1950’s. But her stage name was undeniably catchy. I just figured she was supposed to be, in some way, “exotic.”
I’m thinkin’ that MOST of us remember her! And, who could forget a name like “ZaSu”???
Oh, I didn’t see the original in Stel’s post before I said/typed that. 😀
nighthawks, I remember the Gale Storm show. I was just a little girl but my parents watched it.
‘We’ just made the best Chocolate Banana Walnut bread! Yum! I was able to pull all the ingredients and MMM did all the ‘stirring’. My right had doesn’t work & I’m right handed.
I want to thank all of you for your good wishes in yesterday’s conversation. You are all my ‘treasures’! xoxo

Dear, dear, Candi,
This is so full of HOPE! Thank God for Jack’s constant support, and this whole ‘family” Thanks for your wonderful encouragement!
xoxo Rita

Thanks for your hope, Nancy! It’s folks like you who help me the most!
