His name is Shrek, and he was a Merino sheep who ran away from the farm in New Zealand, in 1998, and wasn’t found for 6 years.

Turns out he was living in a cave, so no one saw him. When found, he looked like this.

He was docile, and seemed perfectly happy to be brought home and sheared, so no one really knows why he left, and whether he was hiding or just lost.

In any case, this was not an ordinary job of shearing… his picture was in newspapers, and a champion sheep shearer volunteered to help. About 60 pounds of wool was removed, which is so far considered the largest amount sheared from any sheep.

It’s not good for a sheep to have all this wool. They overheat, and get infections… one story said he had to be carried back to the farm cos he couldn’t walk much.

People were asking how sheep survived before people sheared them… the thing is, they’ve been selectively bred for many years to have a lot more wool than wild sheep, and to lose the gene that makes some breeds shed much of their coat in spring.

Luckily for Shrek, Merino wool is prized for its breathability, or he would have been hotter. The cave helped, too, and New Zealand isn’t as hot as Australia.

Malinois are very trainable, and are favored in much of the world nowadays for police work.

Border collies, which that seems to be one of in the gif, above, are often rated the smartest dogs… but Malinois are up there too.

Both need strong direction and handling or they’ll take over 🙂

Wow… His feet don’t touch the ground for so long he’s almost flying!

Looks like a border collie.

According to Google Lens:
This image shows a sunset viewed from an airplane, specifically above a deck of altocumulus clouds.

  • The striking red and orange colors are caused by sunlight interacting with the clouds from above, not by fires or lava below.
  • The photo was captured at an altitude of approximately 30,000 feet.
  • It was taken near O’ahu, Hawaii, by photographer Nathan Province.

Looks like a fun road to drive if you knew no one else was on it. With my luck, I’d get stuck behing an old 36HP VW bus with bad rings.

I would prefer that to being behind a semi attempting those curves. You know, like the one near the top of the picture.

Yeah, you definitely DO NOT want to try to pass him on those curves! He’ll need every inch available across both lanes, and if you’re there besides him, you’re SOL.

Heartthrobs of my adolescence…

the boys are…
Ricky and David Nelson

shown with

Their father, Ozzie Nelson, and a stray dog,
in the “Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet”, 1957

It’s GOT to be a coincidence… But this was the May 27th episode!

I didn’t recognize him right away, in the kid picture, so I started to scroll down, without peeking… but as soon as the top of his hair disappeared at the edge of the screen, I could see his face more plainly…

and I knew he’d grow up to be…

I was going to say the same thing.

I wouldn’t trust that photographer after getting these prints back.

Actually, though, I’m starting to think all these food posters we’ve been seeing are AI generated, including yesterday’s junk food, and the one the day before with repeated images.

This one seems really messed up. It miniaturized some things that should be whole family dinners and puts them on a plate, like the weird sausage-shaped “Sunday Roast”.

Besides the missing bangers, there’s no such thing as “Beef Weilsh” or “Scoch Psy.” At least, neither I nor Google have heard of them.

There’s Welsh beef, which just means beef from Wales, not a particular dish…. but I think that’s meant to be Beef Wellington, which is made in a roasting pan. You get a slice on a plate. I suppose the round things are meant to be Yorkshire pudding?

And I think that the other is a very bad representation of Scotch eggs, which are boiled eggs, coated in sausage and deep fried, whole.

The fish in the fish and chips have tails. Is that done anywhere?

There is so much wrong with every ‘dish’.
This is AI slop to the extreme. I can feel the braincells dissolving just looking at the ‘picture’.

Yes! Sorry…I guess I hadn’t refreshed when I started typing my comment above, so I just saw yours.

I started out thinking these recent posters were the opinions of their creators, often misguided, like yesterday’s “worst” junk food.

But now, especially after this one, I think they were just handed off to AI programs, from start to finish, and published without much oversight.

Tough getting old even now. I just spent (literally) the whole day at the hospital with my mom (92 years old) for a gall bladder removal. She had a tough time getting out of the anesthesia…so they kept her in recovery for nearly four hours instead of two. But she’s at a friend’s place for a few days…I understand the word “empathy” but really haven’t a bit of a caretaker gene in me.

I hope you visit often and help relieve her frustration at being cooped up. There’s a young person hiding inside that old body, trying to get out.

Place Saint-Sulpice, Monmartre, Paris…
Another from Eduoard Boubat… taken in 1949.

I love her hat. I think it makes her look magical….like she could fly away on that umbrella.

Maybe a witch, or maybe an ancient, wise nanny, like an older Mary Poppins.

Yep. I saw him when I was a kid.

Funny, he looked so much taller then. Maybe cos I’ve grown since then.

In Highschool we had to take a quarter in gym class in basketball. I stunk at offense, so being tall, I was defense. But I would hum the Harlem Globtrotter theme and wave my arms wildly and the other team would miss the basket.

That looks like a deformed foot. Hope it’s OK. I can still sometimes whistle like a meadowlark. It confuses the kids when I wiggle my finger in front of my mouth as if I’m making the trill sound like that. Fun to watch them try. Then I move my finger away, and they get it. 😉
