Casey at the Bat; great poem, really gets at the American passion for baseball. I can’t see a movie in it though, at least not for humans. Bassets are another thing entirely. The latter is where I can believe the build-up, the drama, and the intensity would shine through.
That’s what I’m talkin’ about. But that piano he’s playing sounds extremely tinny and “honky-tonk.” Definitely an upright. No grands where he was working.
I sometimes like to share the origin story of a holiday; unfortunately the name of the historian who researched this particular bit of history is itself lost to history.
Most people don’t know that back in 1912, Hellmann’s mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying
12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship
after its stop in New York.
This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not
make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.
The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss.
Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.
The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.
if i disappear for the next week, it’s because our oldest is visiting from NC. and he talks a LOT! i thought i could check in and say ‘howdy’, but………. we’ll see.

I remember a Disney animated short about that.
There was a sequel too. Casey’s nine daughters forming a ladies’ baseball team….
May the fifth (of tequila) be with you.
Thanks for the reminder! Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Man, that looks delicious. Sign me up.
Which one has the Mayo in it?
I take the 5th.

I hope that stuff in the middle is supposed to be cheese.
Okay, I see the hoagie. But where’s the Carmichael?
Here he is!

Sorry, I just can’t see him in white tie and tails performing a concerto in Carnegie Hall…
