And well it might. It gave me the creeps as an adult. Robert Mitchum is a truly scary character. This film is likely the reason he got the part he did in Cape Fear.
It was in this movie that Robert Mitchum (I’d normally put his name in a spoiler box, but it’s already been mentioned) had the letters “L-O-V-E” tattooed on the fingers of his right hand and “H-A-T-E” on the left …. a tattoo that afterward took on a life of its own.
He had one letter at the base of each finger, but I’ve seen it more often with a letter on top of each knuckle. In movies, on the street… at concerts. Bikers, jailbirds … even a few women.
Oh yeah… And Radio Raheem had it as giant brass knuckles in “Do the Right Thing”.
…
It’s not that I hang out with bikers and street people… but I’ve been in tough crowds, gone to (honestly only a couple of) rock festivals, and I’ve caught buses on the wrong side of the tracks, cos that’s where they always put the greyhound station…. so I’ve probably seen it personally at least a dozen times. I doubt any of the wearers knew it came from a b/w 1950s movie.
Funny thing is I did know. I remembered it from seeing it on Robert Mitchum, who spooked me with it as a kid.
Um… I thought you were posting an official answer, so I didn’t peek till I found the cat.
But now I decided to take a look and verify my find… And oops… If I understand your directions, I don’t think you’re describing where I see him/her…. And I don’t see anything in that spot.
Where I see him.
On our side of the narrow horizontal road. Across that road from the bush I think you mean. There a little dirt slope down to the dry grass, and to the right of that, a low retaining wall of stones.
Kitty is sitting just to the right of that dirt slope, in front of the rocks. A tabby with black stripes on his legs.
Oh! He (or she, of course) suddenly jumped out at me, when I was almost but not quite ready to give up!
As with most of the photos like this, once you see him, you can’t not see him…. though I have to say the poor resolution makes it easier than usual to lose him again.
In fact, were it a sharper photo, it probably wouldn’t be a puzzle at all.
One hint that’s not enough of a hint to spoil anything…. I know it sounds obvious but sometimes I have to remind myself, too:
It’s a real photo, not a contrived puzzle, so it’s a real cat. So look for something the size of a cat.
He could only get the fancy heads in extra-small….

The filename is kind of a giveaway… (I was just thinking it was that movie when the name popped up.)

Was he really the origin? I figured it was an old prison tattoo from before that.
legos

OMG! I recognized the teeny people…. Then I realized:
It’s all Legos! It’s Legos!
I want to play with it… Or at least look at it.
There’s the Transamerica Tower, and the Chinatown gate…. so it must be San Francisco, though a condensed version.
I gotta look it up… I’ll be right back…..
….
Okay I’m back (didja miss me?)
And yup, it’s a Lego model of downtown San Francisco…. but it’s in Florida.
In Winter Haven, to be specific, at Legoland Florida, in a part called Miniland USA.
And it’s about one million Lego pieces!
I guess I can’t go to Florida…. sigh….

Golem?
When they roll up the streets in Amsterdam they aren’t kidding!
Can you find the cat?
Fluffy blends right in, literally and figuratively. I bet Phydeaux is a good friend.
Would be nice if it were real!
god no
god no what?
Is this one of those scary pictures you have to look really closely at?
I think the pup is doing the looking closely part for you.
see the cat?

There’s a plant stalk in front of her (“all cats are she” : Poe)

Yes, Susan, there she/he is… I needed your description… I haven’t found her/him without your help. Thank you so much!
Yup, that’s her.
POE: ‘DESULTORY NOTES ON CATS’
And I found a third one over on the left!

A very young teenager?
The above kid a few years from now?
I always remind Claude (cos you know he can hear me, right?) that Cleo can’t do anything like other dogs.
But in this case, I’m not so sure.
…
I’ve heard other dogs, especially my own, give this same exact speech, with the same plaintive expression.
The only difference is that other dogs seem to have a problem speaking aloud… and also with getting the proper clothing.
I’m sure if my little dog had been able to speak, and to order up a costume from the wardrobe department, it would have been very very similar.
I know she told all my friends that I never ever fed her.

Meanwhile I do like the artwork in this strip.
