Searching for this picture, I discovered that this is not a dwelling, but part of something called a stepwell… Structures, mostly in India, built to let people reach deeply set ponds, holding water from the rainy season.
India has seasons of monsoons and seasons of very hot, dry weather. Ponds and wells near the surface dry out. The thick walled, deep stepwells preserve water for drinking and washing.
They’re kind of like a very wide wells, with walls you can ascend and descend on stairs, and carry water back up to the surface, as these women are doing with the pots on their heads.
What look like blank doorways are actually niches, some decorative, but often where people can sit and feel cooler in the heat, or even have small gatherings.
Apparently in some stepwells, some water has been brought to niches and small ponds on higher levels… In others, you have to go all the way down to have a drink or cool off.
Don’t get me wrong… they were thieves and cold blooded murderers… but some of the thrill-seeking, posturing, bravado came from being bored teenagers in dusty Texas towns.
Clyde started stealing cars at 15.
Bonnie was 19 and Clyde 20 when they met…
But before they could really get together, he was sent to prison for a couple of years, and came out at 22, set on revenge.
It’s not a species, it’s a hereditary trait, found in a certain percentage of a population…. more in some places or species then others.
There must be times when more or fewer are born than other tlmes, but unless they’re more susceptible to poaching or diseases, I don’t know why their number would be dwindling.
They should remain at about the same percentage in each successive generation.
Yes it’s sort of funny and we can appreciate it. Yes, there are (and will be) lots of alternative takes on the elections (as well as what’s happening in Canada). I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’ve seen too many comics descend into the abyss of partisan politics instead of allowing people to enjoy each other. I’ve tried to steer this site away from the worst of that, but it’s not my comics site. I admire and appreciate all the work that Nighthawks puts into it, day after day after day, and I’ll try to protect it when I can. It’s up to the rest of you each to decide on your own what you want it to be by what you post and whom you invite to enjoy and appreciate this site. Thank you, Nighthawks, for your tireless efforts. Bravo!
I know it was a joke, but right now I don’t want to be reminded of the destruction coming. I worked 35 years in the auto industry improving emissions and fuel economy. When I started, the rest of the world was just beginning to notice what the US had learned, they were just beginning to address emissions. In the US there were thousands of jobs engineering and making catalytic converters and carbon canisters. The world came to the US to learn and buy US made components. As long as the US led, there were engineering jobs here. In his previous term, he stifled development in the US; the jobs left. Our tech center closed, I lost my job, and the work moved to Europe. In Europe there was impetuous to further improve. Now we have to buy technology from China & Europe; our clean energy development has been gutted. Attempts by the current administration to restart them will be stopped. I’m sorry if some think this is politics; it’s not, it’s my life and career.
I’m listening to the barred owls while looking at the pictures of the coyotes up above. It would be interesting to hear both of them making their noises together. Reminds me of the bedding down scene in “The Three Amigos”. Good night Ned.

Where do the doorways go?

Either extremely low-hanging clouds, or a composite.
when I visited the Cape back in the 80s, I bought a large postcard with this image–pretty sure it wasn’t photoshopped

Poor kid probably doesn’t know what to make of a place built expressly for playing.
I’m not sure he even knows what to make of “play”… something of which he’s had little experience.
:’o(
Something involving food, I’m guessing.

Now that’s creepy…
I don’t even want to speculate…

He was 25 and Bonnie not yet 24 when they died.
Local celebraties! They spent some time in an apartment (now preserved as an historic marker) and escaped a police raid.

But what do I know.

C’mon, Claude. Give him the one off your hat.
I believe I have found all nine. Found six on first go-round, then came back hours later and (I think) found three more. Fingers crossed.
Poor guy…. He might look down and out, but apparently, he’s got the gin, and he’s got the vermouth.
So he’s not really down…. just out.
Of olives.
Looks like Claude could help… But to my mind, that would be an actually “dirty martini.”
In any case, I’ve got some differences for you…..
If you want to see the ones I found…..
Excelsior!
I know we’re not suppose to do politics, but this struck me as more funny than the former.

I picked both of these up at Teresa Burrit’s Frog Blog (where she got them from, I do not know).
