Burgess Meredith I think. But presumably not “Time Enough at Last.” His birthday today according to Ten Cats…

Great character actor. He was making that very face and getting paid for it for decades.

IIRC this was one of the rare Twilight Zone episodes I didn’t like.

Scared me AND they killed the hero.

Actually, maybe not.

He starred in several… I may have the wrong one for the picture, or maybe not.

Time Enough at Last sounds like it would be the one where he finds the library but … sniffle… breaks his glasses.

….

In the one I’m recalling, he’s a librarian… I can’t remember why there’s a new regime, but he’s sentenced to death because libraries are obsolete and books are banned.

He’s allowed to choose the method of his execution, and he chooses an assassin. Somehow he gets the judge(?) chairman(?) or whatever he is to come visit him just before he’s due to be killed.

I obviously need to look this up… I didn’t realize I’d forgotten so much. I don’t remember whether they both died or just him, but I know he gets blown up.

Look closer… Lots of trees, but mostly not tall ones.
It’s at a high altitude.

It was very pretty at street level but I was there a long time ago…. And even back then, you could turn the corner from a beautiful park and find yourself on an unpaved back street.

But if course, not many cities can beat Vancouver.

Mountains are quite close, on the left. These “hills” look like the spurs of the mountains. (I’ve never been there, but on Google Earth it appears to be a pretty impressive mountain).

Nine million in the city proper… 22-ish million in the metropolitan area, largest population center in North America.

Bigger than new York City in both measures!

Hmmm… Well, most baby birds are… let’s call it awkward… before they’re fully, or at least mostly, fledged.

The one in your video doesn’t have much fluff in the downy stage, so he’s not exactly cute, I’ll admit. But “Ugly” seems…. kinda harsh.

Maybe the cuter, downier ones in the nest above aren’t pigeons?

Reasonably well laid out, it’s just that the infrastructure couldn’t survive the devastation of the earthquake. I wonder how many cities could actually survive that kind of an earthquake, even today? I’m not looking forward to a big one in my SoCal area, no matter how well I prepare for us and my kids.

More damage was done by the fire and attempts by the military to confine it.

SusanSunshine

Yes… The earthquake was a terribly disruptive minute or two… knocked down buildings and killed thousands of people.

But then the fires raged for days. The water mains and other pipes were broken by the earthquake, so it was impossible in places to save anything.

San Francisco had a disused Gold Rush era system of cisterns for fighting fires… Starting in 1906, it was revived, and more built.

It’s still maintained, and more are being added, to this day…. A hilly city prone to earthquakes could be vulnerable to broken waterlines, so the huge tanks are kept full, just in case.

Many intersections have big circles of bricks marking their locations under ground.

I don’t know what connection the background photo has to the fact disclosed. Those hooded figures appear to be women, and they appear to be in more of a forest than a jungle setting.

She does look a bit like her…

But the picture to me, looks like it was taken in the 1930s.

There’s something about Hollywood…. Even when someone is playing a part set in an earlier time, the photos show something of when they were taken.

He’s aware, that’s why he staged these three pictures like this. The final picture shows that he obviously knew what the end result of that would be.

SusanSunshine

It’s says he set up the pictures on purpose…. did he not think the stick would stop the wheel?

Arfside

Or if it stopped the wheel, he wouldn’t continue forward and get thrown off, right? An interesting way to learn one of Newton’s laws. I’ve lost many a layer of skin to asphalt and dirt, and lived to tell about it…sometimes, the bike, not so much. That’s where we learn to fix things. Especially if you have to ride that bike each day, every day for your paper route, rain or shine.

The kid is not an idiot. He staged a FAKE accident. If he was dumb enough to actually perform the stunt, the crowning picture would be the bike on it’s way over. In the final picture the stick is in the same rotational location as where he placed it; at the top of the rotation, not around the back where it would have actually stopped the bike.

Yes… I’m coming to the conclusion that he didn’t actually fall off; the last picture is posed.

Either he wanted a dramatic picture, or he’s making his version of a PSA….

In either case he’s faking it.

As a matter of fact, had he fallen like that on his left side, it seems to me the bike would either be lying in the opposite direction, left side up….

Or, he’d be lying on the other side of it, behind it in our view.

SusanSunshine

There’s also chock-a-block … not really full, but both expressions relate to being stuffed or packed.

The only chock I can think of is the kind you use to wedge a wheel or tire, to keep something from rolling.

I don’t have a clue what that has to do with being full.

However, yes, Claude…. whether it’s chock full of chocks or of something else, there’s no room for anything more.

Side note…. Chock Full O’ Nuts was once a chain of stores selling… you guessed it…. roasted nuts.

It turned into a chain of coffee shops, and at some point, they started marketing their coffee.

Nowadays it’s a supermarket coffee brand. They sell it at Costco.

Not that long ago, they started putting a disclaimer on the cans.

The label now reads “No nuts – 100% coffee!”

Apparently, with today’s heightened concern about nut allergies, some people weren’t buying it, because they thought (….I feel like there should be a drum sting here…) they thought it had nuts in it.

I’m glad, for safety’s sake.

That’s probably why they even swapped the cigarette for what looks like a smartphone, and the liquor bottle for a soft drink.

With today’s photo editing capability, the guys could be sitting on that beam in a studio, with the background photoshopped in… the best safety measure of all.

But any or all of that makes it not a repeat of the original, which is famous because of the derring-do, or folly, depending on your viewpoint.

Personally, I’m quite happy to see the danger not be replicated.

Waiters serving lunch to workers during the construction of the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in NYC.
Most likely that the construction workers are dressed up a waiters, if not I hope the waiters got a really good tip!!

Maybe the same crew that did the 1932 reenactment will do this one too. They can make sort of a name and a niche for themselves, re-posing famous high altitude construction photos.
