Crows not only use tools, they make them…. simple tools, like bending a nail into a hook, but intellectually, that kind of foresight is a big leap from just seeing a hook and using it.

I don’t know whether the monkeys break rocks into more usable sizes, or otherwise create tools.

But both species are in the Paleolithic, development-wise, so if/when mankind disappears, it should only take about ±2½ million years till one or the other invents computers.

That is either a hand raised peccary, or its AI.

Could be Russia, I’ve seen videos of them handfeeding bears out of their apartment window.

No peccary in Asia or Europe.

Looks like a wild pig to me, but I’ll take your observation of it.

Peccaries are related to pigs, but a different species…

Actually, a different family, cos there are several species of each.

They’re a slightly different shape.. longer nose, shorter tail and tusks, I think more and longer hair.

In South America they domesticate them, but AFAIK the species in the US and Mexico are wild.

I think I’d worry about rabies if one came so close, but maybe these guys know something I don’t… like that peccaries don’t carry rabies, or that this one is domesticated.

In Arizona a smallish species are called javelinas… It’s illegal to keep one as a pet but I saw a video years ago about some people who raised an injured one, and fought to keep it.

It looked and acted strikingly like my dog!

And on a side note, javelinas eat prickley pear cactus. Yeah. What’s for dinner? Uh…I don’t think so…

The only scary part about eating prickly pear is that the javelinas can’t peel them, so they must eat the thorns, and they’re very thorny.

Prickly pear is eaten all over Mexico, where it’s called nopales, and is available here. It’s sold fresh… they say it’s peeled but not enough to my liking. It’s also sold in jars, already peeled, cooked, and cut into strips.

You can also buy the sweet fruit, fresh in some markets … not the flat green “leaves” or nopales, but oval red fruits, called tuna in Spanish. It’s also said to be peeled, but I still got thorns in my hands when I tried it.

I never bought it again, but it was tasty. If you pick it yourself you have to wear gloves and be careful.

Those blurry names are more annoying than having no names at all! I know who number four is and he’s NOT an “Edward G” something!

“Edward G” actually says Edmund O’Brien. I can just barely make it out.

But I agree about the blurry names… And they’re cut off altogether on the bottom row.

I’m going to see whether I can find a legible copy. If I do, i hope Nighhawks doesn’t mind.

Truth be told, though… I also enjoy the ones with no names, as a guessing game.

1934. The first appearance of Mickey Mouse in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade.

BTW … the first parade was in 1924. It was on Thanksgiving, but they called it a Christmas parade, because it brought Santa to Macy’s.

There were no character balloons until 1927…. And that year they were air filled, not helium.

Before that, there were live animals borrowed from the Central Park Zoo… I couldn’t find anywhere that said whether they were on floats, or walked through the streets. I’m thinking probably floats with cages… But who knows!

In 1928, they started filling the balloons with the helium, and for a few years, they released them at the end, offering a reward for their return, empty. That ended when small plane pilots started stabbing them in the air, for the rewards. (Sniffle)

This year will be the 99th, not the 101st, because they didn’t hold it for two years during WWII. In 2020, because of covid, it was smaller, and televised, but no spectators were allowed.

Not yet.

But if I find it, and that mouse is as big as an elephant, I’m running!

C’mon – everyone knows elephants are scared of mice…if there was a mouse in there, we’d have a full on stampede going!

And what’s with all the butterflies? Butterflies like flowers. And no elephant I’ve ever seen smelled like a flower.

Artist really needs to rethink their subject choice…

Oooh… It’s Robin Hound!

We’re going straight into a new tale… or is that a new tail?

The handsome, dashing, heroic …. okay stop saying “bumbling”… Robin Hound! Sigh……

Champion of the poor and downtrodden. His heart is in the right place, even if his feet aren’t always.

I mean, come on, he’s a basset hound. One who cuts a fine figure in tights, and looks ever so photogenic in Lincoln Green.

That’s enough for me! Sigh…..

If you are a foodie, you must visit Portland.
If not, there are lots of good food places all over the PNW.
But Portland has five star food trucks.

Portland is home of the original Old Spaghetti Factory. I’ve been there, long before they moved to the waterfront. We now have one in Medford, but going out to eat isn’t in my budget. Maybe next year. After I see what happens with my taxes.
