Happy Thanksgiving Cleo And Company and every one enjoying this comic!
I have a feeling that next year they will not be expressing what they are most thankful for.
These are excellent with gravy.
They’re really simple to make, too.
From:
My mother’s cookbook (in my mother’s handwriting)
“Scotch Cream Scones”
2 cups flour (all purpose, sifted before measuring)
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 cup shortening (Mother always used Crisco Vegetable Shortening, but lard works equally well)
2 eggs beaten (medium)
1/2 cup light cream (scant) or milk (1/2 & 1/2 cream 10% milk fat / whole milk — 3.25% milk fat ) “Scant” is about a tablespoon short of a full 1/2 cup)
Sift together all dry ingredients.
Cut in shortening with pastry blender or two knives. (The dough should look like peas)
Break eggs into cup and beat, add liquid and stir.
Pour into dry ingredients and mix lightly and quickly.
Pat or roll out (1/2 to 3/4 inch thick) and cut into biscuits. Bake for 10-12 minutes at 375-400 deg. F. (On the second oven rack. Top rack is first.)
Delicious served warm, well buttered. (BUTTERED!!)
Notes from me:
I’ve used buttermilk for these as well. It gives a slightly sharper flavour.
Keep a close eye on them from the 8 minute mark so they don’t burn.
Believe it or not, this picture link to a “The Washington Post” article depicts a statue of Lucille Ball commemorating the “Vitameatavegamin” skit.
As a side note, Listerine mouth wash was 33% alcohol by volume up until at least the late 1960s; so the skit wasn’t actually that far fetched.
P.S. added a bit later:
Open the link “widely mocked bronze statue” within the article for more about the sculptor and a really disturbing picture of the statue at night.
I don’t know why they want the same, inept guy to redo it, unless it’s just because it’s free.
He whines about ingratitude, but I don’t know what makes him think they shouldn’t be ungrateful.
It not only bears no resemblance whatsoever to Lucille Ball; it doesn’t even look like a normal human being, and is way too scary to house in a public place.
She’d been in films for about half a dozen years, in both comedy and dramatic rules…. and was already co-starring with famous comedians, though not yet very famous herself.
Here she is, before all that, on Broadway in “Roman Scandals”, in 1933.
I first saw this picture in a huge photo book of Hollywood stars before they were famous…
I was startled, but my mother said she still thought of Lucille Ball as very glamorous, and was surprised I didn’t.
Hey!
I know a couple of ex-pats who celebrate Thanksgiving, too!
Before covid, there was quite a party at a friend’s house a few days later. Unfortunately, she had a minor stroke only a few weeks ago and is still in strenuous rehab – but her husband is here in Munich because of that, and they will spend a nice evening in a restaurant together.
My apologies. I just typed without really putting much thought into it, and it shows. Obviously the holiday matters to ex-pats, and perhaps others for their own reasons. Whatever, enjoy the day.

Cleo! One thing! One thing for which you’re thankful! Not looking for a laundry list. Like, how about being thankful for Clara and Claude?

Not at our table!
Ours, too!
I am going around the table whacking every single one of them in the head.
those young whippersnappers !
They just look so comfy!
“Dude!…”
“How long does it take to roast one little turkey, anyway?”
they must be watching a really good show…

I’m sorry. That puppy has issues. 😀
To the south-of-the-border people
This guy wants you to take this to heart.
If neither beef nor turkey appeals to you today, sardine day falls on American Thanksgiving this year.

THAT is the best skit of all the skits she did on her show.
Love ya, Lucy.

an all-time great skit!
And an all time ugly statue.

that is pretty scary!
Thank you for cooking this up for us. I feel truly thankful for my Clio family.
You’re quite welcome…
And I too, am grateful for our Cleo family.
Besides her violent proclivities, I’m not so sure Cleo should be airing her other fetish in public, either.
She needs to keep all those magazines under her bed where we can’t see them.
She’s not bad, but there’s a reason she never really hit the charts.
This is before she decided her comedic talents were the way to go.
This was already a comedic role, in a 1940 movie.
She’d been in films for about half a dozen years, in both comedy and dramatic rules…. and was already co-starring with famous comedians, though not yet very famous herself.
