Mine as well. I had done some video production and knew Beta was superior in quality to VHS at the time. Who knew VHS would prevail!

Sony didn’t want to share the technology. Phillips was willing to share. That’s what made the difference. Sometimes being greedy DOES come back and bite you on the rear end.

My wife used to be able to program one of these. It was almost a test to see what level of technology a person was able to deal with.

Once, a neighbor my father’s (who had studied electronics and specialized in communication technology) age and me in my 20s asked me to program his VCR – Video 2000, no manual; I only had beta and VHS.
I succeeded.

Most of my close neighbors for a few years in the late 80’s were over 85, and baffled by technology.

Being the “kid”, though I wasn’t, I became the neighborhood tech person, though on a very low-tech level.

I sometimes programmed VCRs, though some of them didn’t know that was possible. They just recorded to save a program while watching it.

I also lit pilot lights, set new clocks, helped one learn her new washing machine’s functions, etc.

And every spring and fall, I’d have to go to several houses to reset digital watches and clocks.

It was ok.. I got cookies and such.

My first VCR was a lot like this… “piano key” controls, top loading. Weighed 35 pounds.

The display was labeled “digital” …

But the digits were little flaps of black plastic with white numbers printed on them, behind half inch clear plastic windows.

When a wheel turned behind each tiny window, the next number fell into place.
Kind of like a rolodex.

It was made around 1978.

Trouble is, I got it in 1986.

The instruction book was gone, but I got the sales receipt.

Half price sale… $1,999, marked down to only $999.

I paid $35.

By the ‘net the pictures are 71 years apart.
Giving her 16 at the top she was 87 on the bottom.
I think that’s a licence plate mounted on the back fender.
Take a look at the tree in the background.

I didn’t recognize her young picture, but I just knew I should be able to place her smile.

Trouble is, the other picture is older than I’ve ever seen her.

We’re used to her more in maybe her 30s-50s.

It finally hit me, that I did know who she was…

That was their only real hit according to Wikipedia, the follow up was a song called “So Fine”.

Suzanna Hoffs (Ex-Bangles) produced a good version of ‘Different Drum’.

Looking for an update on StelBel. Apparently, she can speak (and think?) clearly. Any problems with hands, legs, balance, comprehension? Want to send cards, but don’t want to dumb them down so far that I disrespect the progress that she’s made. Any help?

I talked to her on Sunday (yesterday).

She said in response to my question that she picked up the phone herself but I’m not sure.

She did laugh at some things I said, and could answer some questions, briefly… A long sentence is about 3 or 4 short words.

She didn’t initiate any thoughts or questions.

After a few sentences I could tell even that much effort tired her out, so it was a very short conversation.

I’m pretty sure there are major problems in the areas you mention, Arfside.

That’s part of the reason she’s in a full service hospital, not a different kind of care facility, like a convalescent or nursing home.

We haven’t heard updates, but she doesn’t seem able to understand everything fully.

I asked her whether she had a Thanksgiving dinner and she replied “yes”. But when I said “did you enjoy the turkey?”, she said “what do you mean?”

Her right side was paralyzed at first. I don’t know how much, if any, motion has returned, but I seriously doubt she can stand or walk yet, especially unassisted

Right side paralysis implies the left side of her brain was affected; so, hopefully she can still take nourishment orally (swallowing does close her wind pipe).

She couldn’t swallow at first, then she improved enough to take liquids, so they were pureeing her food and feeding her.

I think she’s doing better than that now, but I don’t know how much better.

She can pick up the phone so I hope she can hold her own utensils and swallow solid food.

No one is telling us, and I don’t ask her such potentially embarrassing questions.

She shows obvious dislike for talking about some details of her situation.

My dad’s stroke was the right side of his brain, and took his swallow reflex, among other things. He was fed Ensure liquid through a feeding tube into his stomach.

Today’s Songs:
1. ‘You Me and Mexico,’ 2. ‘You Really Got Me,’ 3. ‘You Were On My Mind,’ and 4. ‘Young Girl,’ and the ‘Cheap Thrills Cuisine’ recipe 5. ‘Chicken Caesar Wrap.’
1. Edward Bear is Winnie the Pooh’s real name. The group was formed in Toronto (again, watch for another of theirs in list two) The song was composed by Larry Evoy, lead singer and drummer.
2. Ray Davies wrote this after a girl in a club his then band was playing caught his eye from the stage (she disappeared before he could meet her).
3. This is ‘We Five’s’ cover. it was written by Sylvia Fricker (better known as Sylvia Tyson of ‘Ian of ‘Ian & Sylvia / their original version appears below / it was also covered by Crispian St. Peters who will be appearing in list two)..
4. This song has come up here before. A quote from the composer, Jerry Fuller, appears below (by that quote, it is a ‘dark’ song).
5. As with yesterday, skinless is optional by me. It’s a little light on the dressing amount too.

Jerry Fuller quote ( from: 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh):
“I was on the road a lot as an artist, fronting various groups for many years. I guess every entertainer goes through a time when 14-year-olds look like 20-year-olds. That’s somewhat of an inspiration not from my own experience, just knowing that it happens.”

Yay!

The Lone Bssset!

He rides again!

I like stories where somebody rides again!

Especially one of those heroes of the old West, a basset hound!

Kinda wanted to see into that one particularly action packed panel, where he and the faithful Alpo bring that bad Cat Cavendish to justice.

But apparently, so much happened so quickly, there wasn’t even time to take a picture!

You know it was a fair fight, though, and justice was served.

You know that because his hat is snow white!

(No! The color, not that girl who sang with bluebirds and lived with seven short guys.
Try to keep up!)

Hey, he’s wearing a tin star!

Another sign that he’s a super good guy!

Is he the Sheriff of someplace?

(And no, not that guy with the red cape.

That’s a different cartoon.

Stay with me here.)

Here & healthy. It was time for the big family Thanksgiving in New Jersey. This year it was followed (Saturday) by the MASSIVE wedding of the son of a friend of ours. He’d gotten his degree in mathematics and became an actuary$$$$ so he paid for the wedding himself. I had spent the entire summer trying to slowly lose weight to fit my suit. I succeeded before Thanksgiving, then CHOWED on TG. It was a tight fit on Saturday ☺

Thanks for asking. In general my health is excellent; if I “disappear” for a bit it’s more likely doing something fun than anything tragic.
