I’ve seen that blast as the background of other “funny” pictures….
Quotation marks because we’re lucky here in the U.S….. There are places where people wouldn’t see the humor.
…
BTW, I was taught in elementary school that if we were caught outside when an atomic blast happened nearby, we should be sure to brush off any ash that fell on our clothing.
Of course, John Wayne was a 4-pack-a-day smoker…a major factor in his cancer.
But, yes, you’re right….many people (plus the environment) suffered from the effects of the tests out in the Nevada deserts. That’s true. However, I think Susan might have been referring to the fact that most countries, including the U.S., can count themselves as very fortunate that they were never targeted by a nuclear weapon attack, especially in a highly-populated area. The victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the other hand, would probably not find images like that humorous.
Exactly! Any problems have only affected a tiny percentage of the U.S. population, compared to Japan’s.
Even if you believe a few hundred died here, which is unproven, we’re still lucky, compared to those hundreds of thousands.
…
As for John Wayne…
I’m no fan of atomic weapons or testing.
But to be fair, many studies and opinions have been published and the only consensus seems to be that testing exposure may have been “a factor” for Wayne.
His sons were with him during filming and neither has ever had cancer; his wife, Pilar, died of it but never went with him.
4 packs a day is known to be deadly.
…
The 100s of people who actually lived near the testing sites, mostly on rural reservations, were many times more exposed than any actors who may have been on location for a month..
They still haven’t proven to the satisfaction of a court that it caused their frequent cancers….
Though I think it probably did, and the government reaction is a disgrace.
Most of my answer is in my reply to Stel, if you will kindly read that.
But I also want to say that when you talk about something like the effects of atomic testing on the US population….
For Europeans, even those who have studied it and “know” the facts…
it’s often still hard to get a feel for the size of the United States.
….
To say that a few hundred bad outcomes from tests in Nevada or New Mexico made the whole US unlucky…
The air distance from New York City to Las Vegas, Nevada (just for an example city) is almost twice as far as from Munich to Cairo or Moscow.
If 100 people were killed in Cairo, you probably wouldn’t say all of Germany was unlucky, even though you’re much closer to the danger than most Americans are to Nevada.
The American Midwest is widespread, but most of it is closer to New York than to Nevada.
…
In fact, from NYC, Las Vegas and Munich are about equally distant…
And while Europe, including all of the former USSR, is slightly bigger than the US, all of the European Union would fit handily within our continental borders.
To say anything happened to the whole United States, consider the distances.
I remember a story about a man that had to move from some place on the east coast to Spokane Washington. Soon after he decided to take the family to see the Ocean. Thats when he finely realized how BIG states in the west are. It’s not just Texas, California, and Alaska.
I could have played every note of “Red Rubber Ball” in my head, but I never really got that it was a F you song till I saw their expressions. “I’ve got my life to live, and I don’t need you at all.”
.
I have no desire to know what that is.
Funny as all get out!!!
Human, clean my snout!
What makes you think I dug that hole?
“I don’t see what the big deal is. I went for a beauty treatment, and it involved a mudpack.”
Aww… A polka-dotted purple piggy!
I want one!
I would take good care of it, I promise.
And I would name it Spot.
Or, “name him George”…
,
Love that view!!
Isn’t that Steve McQueen driving down the hill?
Look out!
Funny, when you’re walking there, it doesn’t look as dramatic as it does in a photo.
Not scary…. except maybe when you parked near the top.
Later you’re dreading the three-or-four-block uphill walk to your car.
…
…
We don’t call it the Evil White cat for nothing! You will have to find some place else to sit for now, Claude. Cleo is going to need a nap.
..
My sister, after eating chili at that roadside diner.
I know where that is! Palmdale, CA. Don’t know where the nuclear blast is.
Is that you and your big sis, Nighthawks?

Yes, with our hands.
No, you aren’t – John Wayne and many of his colleagues died from cancer because of their westerns being produced in the vicinity of nuclear tests.

Or the former inhabitants of the Bikini islands.

This can’t be a place on Earth!
What a Godzilla movie this could make!
It does look kinda science-fictiony.
As high energy as QT is, when Kiki says no, she stops.
Cleo needs to learn that it’s hard to overcome built in weapons.
I love that line…………..it’s only a CAT!!
I could have played every note of “Red Rubber Ball” in my head, but I never really got that it was a F you song till I saw their expressions. “I’ve got my life to live, and I don’t need you at all.”
Defiant, not aggressive, though.
An “I’m ok without you” song, after being dumped.
One of the first I learned. It still comes up in the “To play” rotation occasionally.
I think I may have dozed off during Cleo’s epic battle….
Suddenly it’s very late!
…
She did at least try to vanquish the beast….
So this is where I say…”Good Knight!”
French toast
Hey!.. There will be no dragon slaying around here.
