This shouldn’t make me laugh, but it does.

It’s considered a “hidden mother” photograph. But she’s like human version of the ostrich… if the myth were true that ostriches think they’re hiding when they bury their heads.

But they don’t… so only this mother thinks that works.

Much as I like this, and agree with the point they’re trying to make…

a devilish little voice in my head is whispering, and something is poking me, trying to make me point out that not everything in the library is true either.

We need libraries. Human knowledge must NOT be allowed to deteriorate, and shrink down to whatever bit of it has been preserved on the Internet.

There’s.so much more…. many times more… stored in the world’s libraries.

We also need teachers of any description, who can convey judgement, and critical thinking, helping people understand how to sort the grain from the chaff.

The head of Abraham Lincoln being carved into Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, around 1935 or 36.

The faces were carved left to right, and dedicated as each was finished, Washington first, in 1934. Lincoln’s section was the third to be finished, and was dedicated in 1937.

Originally, the plan called for carving a full bust of each of them, down to the waist, but that would have required removing much more of the mountain.

In 1941, sculptor Gutzon Borglum died, and the US was heading into WWII, so the funding dried up, and it was declared finished.. You can see that they had started carving more of George Washington by that point.

I’d ask “Where’s Courage?”, but there’s something about them “weeds” in the foreground.

Funny… I was reading about goldbacks just the other day… an online article about why not to buy them. I’d never heard of them, so I wasn’t about to anyway.

They’re an “alternative”, privately issued currency meant to appeal to some types of survivalists, preppers, and libertarians… those who don’t trust the US government, or think US dollars won’t hold their value when everything collapses. Some collectors and speculators buy them too.

They have a thin layer of a special polymer embedded with a tiny bit of real gold, so they’re quite literally backed by the value of the gold.

The problem is that they sell for over twice as much as that value…. I think that 10 Goldback note sells for over $800, sometimes a lot more, depending on where you buy it, and contains maybe $400 worth of gold, which would be difficult to extract.

So just like the US currency the users of them say they don’t trust, they, too, rely on a network of believers to have the value that they supposedly do. There are series for different states, but the states have nothing to do with their minting or acceptance. They’re not legal tender anywhere.

The first series was Utah, in 2019. A couple were in 2020 and 2022, but most were issued in 2025 and 2026, so there’s not much data on long-term value. There are some stores and websites that accept them, at an agreed upon price, mostly in the states the particular series was printed for, though I don’t know why it matters.

The file name includes the words “Worst dressed fails — fashion police”.. . but I think it’s a great outfit.

I’d even say I love it, and more power to her… if it weren’t for the fact that it’s almost certainly generated, or at the very least modified, by AI.

The sign in the bus window is in no known language; her mittens don’t match, and their knitting, as well as that of some other spots on her outfit, is erratic.

And I’ve been seeing YouTube ads for lots of obviously AI generated bulky knit sweaters with animal designs.

So I asked Google Lens… and it agreed.

So… the enticement to join the Polish Border Guards is…. that you get to drink out of a muddy stream with your horse.

Wow… I don’t even want to imagine the Christmas bonus.

I was going to make a joke (me??) about the good stuff that fellow must be smoking….

But somehow, I just couldn’t make fun of it, because I knew an artist and at teacher years ago who said this might be his favorite painting. Yeah, I know… there’s no accounting for taste.. But I do see why, even if it wouldn’t be my pick.

It’s “Smoker and Absinthe Drinker” (Fumeur et Buveur d’absinthe), an oil painting on canvas, created between 1856 and 1860 by Honoré Daumier.. At the time it was modern and shocking, in both technique and subject matter.

It shouldn’t have been… On a different level, Rembrandt broke that barrier 2 centuries earlier, with his rough textured still lifes of meat, and portraits of peasants. But the world went back to pretty pictures, and it had to be broken again.

This is Mrs. Hazel Reed, thirty years old, at her wartime job as a car repairman’s helper, in Pitcairn, Pennsylvania,

Working in the Pennsylvania Railroad yards, she’s making 72¢ an hour. While she’s repairing wooden boxcars, her husband is in the US Army. … photographer, Marjory Collins, May, 1943

Great to see Clara dressed up, in a pretty print dress and nice shoes… though I’m sorry it takes having a friend in the hospital to get her to do it. I hope he or she is doing well!

They’re walking right past maternity… if they were visiting someone having a baby, it would be a good reason to be at the hospital. But they’re a little past having many friends in the maternity ward… Not that they couldnt be friends with some younger people.

(I do love the signs on those doors.)

Anyway… As they walk along… I see things changing…. Do you see them too? By the time they get to panel 2, I really think…

these 9 things have changed….

So… a firgotten uprising in Tyne and Wear… or did they come to make sure “Gloucester Arms” wasn’t the name of a shop dealing in illegal armnaments?

The ‘Gloucester Arms’ is a Pub (But you already knew that), and I doubt that they’ve ‘borrowed’ a vehicle to nip out for a quick one 😉

It’s not really a tank though, it’s probably a Royal Engineers armoured vehicle by the looks of it, which would make those riding on/in it ‘Sappers’.
