I have a pack of Blackjack gum and also Clove gum – memories. My Dad used to smoke cigars and chewed that or Sen-sen and gave me some sometimes. Hence, my love of licorice. I usually would get licorice or Good and Plenty when we went to the movies.
I loved Blackjack gum and Good and Plenty (though the box in this picture is too faded to look appetizing.)
Along with other licorice, I still buy licorice pastilles, sometimes called “pastels”, which are like miniature Good and Plenty… as long as none of it contains real licorice… most are really anise anyway.
…
I never liked Sen-Sen or anything Clove though.
Beechnut peppermint was my favorite gum.
And my older (boy) cousin taught me to roll a pack of candy cigarettes in my t-shirt sleeve, to look cool… or so I thought.
…
Have you ever had fennel? The fresh bulb, not the seeds.
I used to buy it occasionally, and local Italian restaurants used to serve it as a vegetable (they call it finocchio) … but I haven’t seen it in ages.
It looks like a peeled onion, but grows above ground, crunches like celery, and tastes mildly of licorice. You can eat it raw or cooked.
It’s a pretty common vegetable here (in Munich, Bavaria, Germany; the northernmost Italian city there is), but TFTB eliminated all its anise taste. Sometimes organic ones taste like they should. Or from a Turkish/Greek/Italian store or a real farmers’ market.
We love it in each and every way – and it’s a necessary ingredient in any decent Bouillabaisse.
Mary Janes only seemed to appear at Halloween in my treat bag. Got plenty of bubble gum cigars and candy cigarettes too (tells you how old I am). Also remember those Necco wafers.
Many stores and office buildings in Alberta put up signs up as necessary after a snow fall from the sky warning visitors that snow may fall off the building.
There’s a really looney cartoonist on Cleo and Company?
Must be. I saw the huge WHUMP!.
Clara must be reading a different Cleo and Company. What was that Clara?….. sophisticated and subtle.
Cleo must have been shaking the tree.
Clara should know that if it’s the latest thing, cliche or not, the ever-alert, fashionable gang at Cleo and Company Productions is going to be right on it!
No matter how ridiculous, if “Garfield” gets a “Whump!”, if Pearls Before Swine” gets a “Whump!”… “Brevity”, “Speed Bump”…you name it….
“Cleo and Company” can’t be far behind.
(Not “Calvin”, say, or “Get Fuzzy”, “Cathy”, or any of the other strips in reruns.)
.
How sweet (I think).
The dog looks like he’s saying “Sez who?”
Then again, bulldogs always look like that’s what they’re saying.
Probably even if they’re saying “Hey, I think you’re kinda cute.”
It’s a standoff!
Let’s see who can snort the most and still breathe.
A faceoff. In the neutral zone.
“Got your nose!”
“No, I’ve got your nose!”
,
It must be hot. 😀
He looks really comfy!
Pure Bliss! Probably where he’s not supposed to be, but who can complain when he looks so happy?
Yeah, he’ll happily snooze in a swampy planter, up to his neck in muddy water…
but any hint of a nice warm bath is the end of the world.
,..
Beautiful!
We once had a Chartreuse who looked just like that. (sigh)
Not gonna find him half submerged in any ¡&₲#! swampy planter!
That’s for sure!!

TFTB?
The Forces That Be
I’ve only had fennel tea. Never knew too much about fennel.
i use ground fennel seed in all my Italian cooking.
The seed is different from eating the bulb, cooked or in a salad.
Both have a bit of licorice taste, though.
I’m not sure if I really remember Beech Nut Gum or not (the Dick Clark postings); but I do know I have absolutely no recollection of the rest of them.
I remeber buying almost all of them…
Mary Janes only seemed to appear at Halloween in my treat bag. Got plenty of bubble gum cigars and candy cigarettes too (tells you how old I am). Also remember those Necco wafers.
I understand that it can happen with snow also.
Yes, I often hear that ‘whump’ when the snow is falling off the roof.
Many stores and office buildings in Alberta put up signs up as necessary after a snow fall from the sky warning visitors that snow may fall off the building.
We have a few of those, two. One place has parking close to the door of the store and they block those spaces after a snow.

never knew the magic word THUMP was so funny!
so, what do they say when it’s a load of snow falling?
Somebody help dig me out of here!!
Wait – that’s not my car!
“Thank you neighbor!” 😀

Cleo insists on being ever so chic….
And Nighthawks knows that she’s got a bazooka.
I’m going to repeat some good news I posted earlier, on yesterday’s strip…
Some of you have already seen it, but this is for those who didn’t come back in the afternoon or evening:
….
I was getting a little worried about PLODS, cos it’s been about 9 days since his last post, so I emailed him to ask how he’s doing.
This is his (almost immediate!) reply:
“I’m doing well. I’m trying to get on the schedule they have given me. (30+) prescriptions. I’ve been home for 4 days.
The only problem I’m having is tremors from one of my drugs which means I can’t type for carp which frustrates me to no end.
Thanks for the reach out.
You can copy and paste this on Cleo”
…
I told him I’d post it again for today’s strip. Sorry if you see it twice, but hey… better twice than never?
Thanks for the update, Plods and Susan.
WHUMP!!!
That’s me falling over in relief hearing that Plods is doing (well, semi-) OK.
Only 30 prescriptions? What a lazy mon! I take 30 prescriptions just so I can do my firs’ job, an’ I got 15 other jobs, mon!
And best regards from Dry and Dusty!
Plods, don’t go near any babies, they’ll hear you rattling. 🙂 🙂 But it’s really good news that you’re home ! !
Thanks! Cool! Keep getting better Plods.
They should go away (or get much better) as they fine tune your meds.
i saw this last nite. what a glorious relief it was to hear the good news. xoxo
Again, so happy for you Plods. Keep healing ~ that’s an order!!
What about “FLUMP”s? Do they count?
It’s split pea soup week.
Where’s the cake picture?
sorry ’bout that. I deleted my comment, and along with it, yours.
let’s start this over.

Okay, let’s.
It’s split pea soup week.
HUMP DAY!!!
At home recovering.
(((((HUGS)))))
💕
now my day is complete!
I’m glad everything’s “coming up roses” for you, Plods!!!!! Keep up the good recovery!
Good morning! 🙂
Thanks for checking in!
So glad you’re doing well.
Hope you read the comments to you, above, after I posted your message.
glad you’re on the mend!
Thanks guys. I can’t hit that thumbs up icon in less than a minute.
Then just don’t.
You’ll have plenty of time (finally!!!) when the meds are finely calibrated.
