The following is a text message  to me from Stelbel’s sister

It’s too early to know how she will recover from the stroke. It’s unknown if Candi recognizes her niece since regaining consciousness. I’ve been told she responds with a lot of ‘yes’ , but it may not necessarily be the right answer. she’s very weak on the right side but has movement in her right leg.Her receptive and communication ability are severely affected. My initial impression is that she will need skilled nursing care neither you or I could provide.Let’s see how she progresses now that she’ll be getting OT PT and speech therapy. The brain may surprise us! I will keep you posted

An illustration for “The Nutcracker” by Italian artist Roberto Innocenti.

I just found out it was a book before it became a ballet.

Gargoyles on Notre Dame; that’s the Pantheon in the background.
Sadly, it appears the politically correct animals are getting involved in Notre Dame’s reconstruction.

That is a spectacular, virtuoso example of monochrome drawing. As with the Booth drawing last week (?), I wonder how many hours, days, it took of sitting in that church for the artist to set that scene in his or her mind with all of the detail, and to then translate that mental image into the drawing we see here. It is astounding to me that humans have this capability.

A work by Raul Colón. I could not find a title (but it’s for sure got something to do with “Sleepy Hollow”).

Well, that was fun! I finally had to get a laser pen to get all but one of these to run out of the frame. That’s when I could spot ol’ Batty!

The artist is Peter De Sève; but I could not find a title or the movie or book this came from (it is a currently out of stock jigsaw puzzle and that could be its original use).
His film work includes ( just to name the three I’ve seen) “A Bug’s Life”, “Ice Age”, and “Ratatouille.”

I actually recognised them all and managed to name them, which quite amazed me as I normally can’t think of the names of actors/celebs even if I do recognise them (Except a few).

Was anyone else located in the correct geographic location to feel the 1989 California earthquake that happened thirty-four years ago today? (Oct 17th) Boy, I’ll never forget it!

OMG yes!

Where were you Derrick?

I was in Santa Rosa, 55 miles north of San Francisco, and twice that far from the epicenter… But it really affected us.

I was assistant manager of a chocolate shop in the two story downtown mall.

Luckily, I had not long before read an article about the special earthquake resistant engineering of the building.

If they haven’t changed it, it has a slightly curved cement base, which sits on a deep bed of gravel, so it can rock a bit without breaking.

The upstairs floor is a wide mezzanine, which, for concrete and steel, is somewhat flexible and springy.

….

It hadn’t been tested. Unfortunately, it seemed not many had read that article.

The building rocked and the mezzanine bounced. The escalators stopped because they had a safety shutoff.

Panic and pandemonium!

It shook for a long time, compared to other earthquakes.

Crowds were pushing their way down the escalator; a panicky few actually jumped off the mezzanine, into the crowd below.

There were pileups at the exit doors, people running for their cars in the parking structure, which you’re supposed to avoid in an earthquake.

My co-worker was an older woman who panicked and wanted to run away.

I knew we were safer staying put.

I grabbed her wrist, and we backed up against the archway that held our electric gate when it was down

She babbled prayers till it was over.

When this shaking stopped and the people had cleared, we were evacuated.

A few ceramic items fell and broke, and some chocolates spilled from the displays, but we were ok.

My co-worker complained to the manager about me the next day, but the manager said no, thank her for keeping you safe… And she did!

Funny thing… Our delivery truck, out of Nevada, was on the way up from San Francisco when it hit.

The driver said he thought he was probably on the San Rafael bridge.

News reports showed it swaying and bouncing.

He didn’t notice.

Oh wow!!! What an experience!! I am so glad that you helped that co-worker. We all need someone who can keep a cool head during emergencies. Not enough people can.
I was in my hometown of Salinas. It’s down in the Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay area. I was at soccer practice actually. It was weird because I jumped up in the air and while at the top of my jump, I could hear the windows of the school start to make a strange rattling noise. When I landed, I almost fell over because the ground was a-shaking so strongly!
We spent the next week without electricity and had to hand crank a radio to get any information about what was happening in the world.
My dad was at the World Series game which ended up being cancelled that day.

We were on vacation there a week before the earthquake. We had driven on that freeway that collapsed. In fact, the news was like a video of our vacation. Every place we had been to in that area had damage.

Oh my! Glad you didn’t have to experience it. That collapsed freeway was terrifying. I was ten years old and nowhere near it, but I’ll never forget them pulling people out (alive) on the news.

I’ve just read the update on StelBel.
Her condition will improve over time, it’s what the upper limit of that improvement is that is the question.

I know that the selling of her possessions and home are necessary, but

 —comment image    nighthawks

please, if you would, ask StelBel’s sister to keep Stelbel’s music collection and the means to play it for her together if it’s at all possible.
It will help.

That will not open the pinata, Cleo. That will obliterate it. There will be no candy, no treats, and no rewards. Only a ringing in your ears that never stops.

Well, it will open it, but just spread the insides over a very large area and in too small of pieces to be usable. Might be quite crispy as well!!

You’re experiencing very real emotions and that’s okay. You should cry and let that relieve you a little bit. I have answered 911 for fifteen years now and I’ve heard horrible, horrible things almost every day. We all give each other a chance to get up and cry after a hard call. It helps so much.
