This is from an 1887 book of costume “patterns”… a design for a Halloween bat costume.

One site showed part of the page with the instructions… Makes you grateful for modern patterns.

No other illustrations or cutting diagrams. It says things like “Make the wings from sheer black material and add whalebone. Fasten with an artificial bat.”

It also says it’s optional to “wear a bat headpiece”.
Right… I’ll just head on down to Target and go to the headpiece department.

But I really love her shoes!

A public urinal, or “pissoir”, in Paris, in 1875.

Very forward thinking, you might say.

They still, in fact, exist. Probably not this one, but more modern versions, that not only provide relief, but help keep the streets clean, which I’m sure was the actual impetus for their creation.

The problem for half the population, is that they don’t provide anything equivalent for those of us not equipped to use these.

i think part of the problem for us is that they know we’re.more modest… they count on the fact that we’re not about to mess up the street, so 150 years later there’s still no accommodation.

it’s still better than in the US, where in most cities there’s nothing.

I’ve read, and I’ve tried to prove to myself, that when the moon looks huge on the horizon, it’s the exact same size it is in the sky.

It only looks so big because it’s next to objects on the ground, and we lose that comparison when it’s in the sky.

They say to find something to measure it against… a ruler, a small object, a comparison to a dime or a ring, or a hole in some notebook paper…. but you have to remember exactly how far you held that object from your eye when you were comparing.

Then when you see it in the sky, make the same comparison, and you’ll see that it’s the same size as it was on the horizon.

Even the so-called “harvest moon” is the same size as the moon in the sky any night…. We’re influenced by the warm color it reflects.

I’ve tried, and yeah…. it does seem to stay the same size, but it’s hard to trust that I’m remembering the distance from my eye exactly, or to believe that the myth isn’t true, and it’s really not bigger on the ground

Canada …especially Quebec and the Catholic church about what they did to the native children they took away from their parents and put them in special residential “schools” to rid them of their “heathen” ways.
Many children died and were buried on school grounds without their parent ever knowing. The last one closed in 1991.

Ooh… Young Dr. Frankenbasset has succeeded in his grandfather’s quest… The creature walks!

It’s big, it’s scary… and it will change the way the world looks at scientists!

Will the first Dr Frankenbasset still be considered a mad scientist, if his grandson has used his research to create life?

I can see that things are already changing…. There are 9 differences in the few seconds between these two panels!

Do you see…

the same differences I see?
