Apropos of nothing there, and yet everything here, tomorrow starts my LAST week of work. Friday I will RETIRE. I plan to spend a few months cleaning up old projects, clearing out old collections, and generally creating order from chaos. Then I’ll see my wife through her knee replacement (not yet scheduled). When all that stuff is done… look out world here we come!
Thank you. My wife has been suffering with bad knees for a few years now. She’s working through the insurance maze even though the doctors know she needs new knees. Insurance says try a few months of PT, after that try at least 3 HA injections, 6 months apart (she just had #3), give the last injection 6 months to work, then she can schedule the replacement.

I’ve been retired since April 2010, and when I look back on it all, I just cannot think of going out there, day in and day out, and doing what I did for 40 years, not that it was that hard, sure, there were rough and very rough patches, but I did love what I did. To the point, today, that I cannot even remember how I did it.
The street bums have it right, this is paradise! What we all want:
To have an allowance (pension; government, investments)
As much as I loved mine at the end, it was time, health problems were unknowingly on the horizon. I was only 56, but after 35 years in the Defined Benefit pension plan, I wasn’t accruing any additional pension (other than my pension was based on my last 5 years). I did miss the interaction and the commonality and community and co-workers let alone the sense of contributing to society, but, Yeah, that fades away over time. What I did at the time, at the end of my career, they couldn’t find a replacement, so they farmed it out amongst 4 other Administrators and what they couldn’t (farm out) they just made “verbal agreements” with the clients. There is a life in retirement, for sure!
I know I’ll miss the social contact. I’ll also miss the walking and stairs. 52 steps to the 3rd floor office, six plus times a day. A nice quarter mile walk from the office to the far manufacturing area. And I had a free health club on premises for lunch time work-outs. But I was always feeling inadequate (to myself, I never received any criticism).
Right now I’m extremely happy.
I hate to say it, but I am looking forward to the “nothing” more than anything else. The final straw was my inability to satisfy the key person at my last job. Everyone else there was happy with what I was accomplishing. The one person who wasn’t satisfied was riding me constantly. That person was me. My 35 years in automotive put me in a place where I could make major contributions with minimal effort. Having to change careers late in life to contact lens manufacturing processing left me performing like the new hire college kids.
I must be a kid around here retiring in 2018 at the age of 66. Yeah, there was a loss of contact with co-workers, but that was replaced with new friends at the Thursday night Open Mic we go to.The people are great, the music is good, if not perfect. My wife and I are the back-up hosts if the regular guy isn’t able to make it for some reason. We are hosting on November 9th while he does a performance for a college class he’s taking and we are doing three weeks in December/January while he takes his family back east for vacation.
I retired last year after 40.5 years in the UK Power Industry, I was 57 at the time having started work straight from school at 16. I miss some of it, but I don’t regret it. I was 50 when I lost my 53 year old sister to cancer, and I was 53 when I ended up in hospital with a cardiac condition. There’s more to life than work (For some people).

“Somebody to Love” is awesome! Spanish Flea is a great song, and was used to great effect in several hysterical movie comedy scenes.
