Not another example of the kind of idiots who take pictures each other standing on the rim of the active volcano, or feeding the friendly bears at Yellowstone.
1989 is before the internet as we know it, but other research indicates that Merilee did enter the photograph in a “Kodak” photography contest and won second prize.
As a side note, having worked on the prairies the two mile estimate is, in my opinion, accurate.
No doubt both mother and daughter came to the same distance estimate.
While any given tornado has winds of 65 to over 200 miles an hour at the spout, the average forward speed is thirty miles an hour with 70 miles an hour being about maximum.
If it suddenly changed course toward them they would have had at least a minute to get in their vehicle and move out of the way.
On the other hand if a 180mph whirling cinderblock came out of the funnel towards them they’d have 20s to see it (can you see a cinder block at two miles? one mile?), determine it’s trajectory, and get out of the way.
They wore more gear than that. Electric heated insulated flight suit. Flack jacket. (Where the term came from.) Oxygen mask. And a helmet. A metal one, over the leather one.
A picture link to other on-the-ground photographs that pretty much had to be taken at the same time.
He did indeed go through basic training and started his military career as a private (remember he enlisted in the U.S. army air force) and flew five official missions (and is remembered by those who were there to have flown in many more / although unofficially).
Sadly, his enlistment was caused by the death of his wife, Carol Lombard, in a plane crash on her way home after appearing at a bond rally.
I wonder..didn’t see any details along those lines—I would like to know more, like why only five missions? I understand those guys had to have at least 25 to rotate
back to the states
years ago, I worked with a guy who was a tail gunner in either a 24 or a 17—he told us that the movies got it wrong. He said that the fighter planes were
incredibly fast and hitting them one on one was impossible.
The standard method was for all gunners in all planes to focus their gunfire into one area ahead of where the enemy plane was heading, with the hope that they would fly into that hail of bullets, which happened not infrequently —enough so that the opposing fighters respected the firepower of these ‘flying fortresses’
According to Wikipedia, MGM convinced the Army he was too valuable to get shot at after the five missions. The “unofficial” missions were ones he flew after being grounded.
Today’s Songs:
‘ Everywhere,’ ‘Evil Ways,’ ‘Ex’s & Oh’s,’ and ‘Fever,’ and the ‘Cheap Thrills Cuisine’ recipe ‘Apple Maple Crunch.’
‘Everywhere’ is the song ‘Fleetwood Mac’ used the poem ‘The Highwayman’ as a video theme.
Animal and Rita Moreno and ‘Fever;’ need anything more be said?
Exes & Ohs got me into Elle King. There are a number of her songs I really like. Exes and Ohs is definitely on my favorites list. I also recommend her: America’s Sweetheart.
When I finally got it to work, it was interesting.
In the second section, I finally saw a picture of a beer hall, prior to that I thought they were just like pubs here in Canada; nope.
We would have, but the trouble with our landlord still continues – so, there was no chance to go to South Korea as planned. And regarding Upper Franconia: Our friend lives here in Munich permanently now since her house there got broken into and vandalized several times. In her absence, fortunately.
On the bright side we will be here for voting.
.
Don’t worry, I know puzzles are hard for you… I’ll post the solution in just a minute.

THE CAPTION IN THE ATTACHMENT COMES FROM HERE
What Susan said.
“Oh yes, I’d gladly sacrifice my daughter to get a bunch of Likes.”
right!

And what about the ones that get picked way up. Stuff just falls from the sky. Like fish or frogs.
Clark Gable served in the USAAF during the war as a waist-gunner in a B-17
I get the feeling this was posed later.
They wore more gear than that. Electric heated insulated flight suit. Flack jacket. (Where the term came from.) Oxygen mask. And a helmet. A metal one, over the leather one.
oh yeah, definitely a publicity photo—but he flew 5 missions for real—did not try to use his movie star status (John Wayne) to avoid serving

Was he any good at it?

It was 25 early in the war. It got up to at least 35 before it was over.

Niiiice kitty.. my, what a friendly smile you have!
Try offering him most of your cheeseburger.
Our Goddess would love the cheese.

SKULL-CRUSHING JAWS!
We once were at the local zoo (Hellabrunn, Munich) at feeding time – that leopard crushed a rabbit skull like it was nothing.

Oh yeah…. that plays very well in 2023.
Love the ball and chain.
Well – you’re busy enough as is.
Kudos to that.

And that’s why I said “yeah”. 😁
She used fudge, not doughnuts.
Your mother?
My wife. ♥
Silly me.
I was thinking of your mother because the ad is so old.
But it still goes on…
Hopefully without the negative imagery in this ad.

Oktoberfest.
Two strikes. – Hail to vomit all over our street for the next 18 days.
When I finally got it to work, it was interesting.
In the second section, I finally saw a picture of a beer hall, prior to that I thought they were just like pubs here in Canada; nope.
Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit!
Prost!
If I don’t have to drink a whole liter of beer.
Well, sitting here on the internet, who’s gonna know anyway.
Is it meant to be streaming video?
I couldn’t get anything, just big blue squares.
But I’m on a tablet, not a computer, and with very sloooow internet.
You didn’t try to get out of town?
