An interview April Stevens and her brother Nino Tempo had on “American Bandstand.”
She was at least 33 when this was recorded.
I can find nothing on where the “April Stevens” name came from.
She passed away in Scottsdale, Arizona on April 17 of this year aged 93.
Glen Campbell was a session musician on the recording, which won a grammy
I had a 1976 (Plymouth) Volare station wagon from 1986 till 2001, and I don’t think I ever drove it without thinking, at least for a moment and sometimes for much longer, of this song.
Getting into the car usually set off the earworm; if not, it would start playing in my head along the way.

And of course, I named the car “Blue”, from “Nel Blu, Depinto Di Blu”….
Italian for “in the blue, painted in blue”…. even though it was beige, and not a Pinto.
“Volare” actually means “to fly”… and it did fly down the highway.

It just don’t get any better than one of Stel Bel’s twinkly posters.
I hate to admit it… but I was around for the rise of the Four Hounds on the music scene…
Though of course, I was only two.

The truth is, I saw them on American Bandstand, along with a lot of other Italian singers…
Including the favored human stars of the day, like Frankie Avalon, Fabian, and Bobby Rydell, though AFAIK none of those three were bassets, and all were born and raised in Philadelphia.
You can see why the Jersey Bassets would be better.
But…. by the time I was a senior in high school, we got folk music, and then the “English invasion”…
A fan of rock ’n roll, and various shaggy groups, canine and human, I no longer cared for the pups’ slick East Coast look and smooth sound.
In fact, my sister’s name is Sherry, and I teased her with my bad imitation of Frankie Tail’s falsetto howl.

Later, I came to appreciate them again, as enduring musical icons of the era.
And just look at the humans Stel posted! What copydogs!
I don’t remember them at all! Were they a real group, or just put together to make the play and movie?
Wow…. I wonder what they sound like.
No human could possibly howl like Frankie Tail!
And those plain dark suits!
Have they no sense of showmanship?
They just can’t match the Hounds’ slick, sparkly jackets.

Dang… now I’m gonna have “Big Dogs Don’t Cry” on the brain all night.
BTW… you know what the original title was for that song… cos it’s about female dogs.
But some people actually censored it in reviews and… um… posters… so they changed it to “Big Girls.”
I’m glad cos I wouldn’t say… um… that other word… here.

He’s 89… And he’s still touring!
Supposedly with the Four Seasons, but he’s the only original member still with the group.
According to one site, they have 29 upcoming concerts currently scheduled, well into 2024… looks like mostly New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut, but they have some dates in Las Vegas and in San Jose, CA.

1. Combine 1/2 cup milk and brown sugar in top of double boiler; cook over hot water until sugar is dissolved. 2. In bowl, blend cornstarch with remaining milk until smooth. Add beaten egg yolks. Stir egg yolk mixture into top of double boiler with milk-sugar mixture. Stir until mixture is thickened. Cook for five minutes more, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. 3. Stir butter into butterscotch mixture. Pour into baked pie shell. Refrigerate until thoroughly chilled. Serve with whipped cream.
Notes from Me:
I cup whipping cream is three cups whipped cream; it’s actually a bit more, but your diet’s shot anyway.
Don’t forget to add the pinch of salt, teaspoon of sugar, and teaspoon of real vanilla extract before whipping.
Prick the bottom of the pie shell before baking to prevent bubbling.
Preheat the oven to350° F.; bake on second rack, top rack is first. It won’t take long. Keep an eye on from the six minute mark. It’s done when it’s “goldy” in colour.

Wow, the Jersey shore. I spent the best days of my pre-college life there. Day trips to Seaside heights, a week in Wildwood. I hated living in NJ, mostly due to the people. At the shore I met girls from Maryland & Pennsylvania. I also enjoyed Frankie and the Four Seasons. I honestly had no idea that they were from New Jersey until decades later when Jersey Boys hit Broadway.
Luckily for native German speakers trying to learn Pirate speech, the declensions are more like those of modern German than those of present day English.
Not as big a transition from using Sie and Du, with their related verb forms, as it is for most Americans to understand you and thou, and various forgotten verb forms for other pronouns.
