Not professionally… occasionally trimming my brother’s or my boyfriend/soon to be husband’s or some such…

That’s what we did in those long haired days, when barbers would just gleefully cut it all off.

I liked doing it .. I had cut my grandmother’s hair as a teenager (brave woman!)… And gone halfway through beauty school during one break from college.

But at this point it was about 25 years of selling collectibles and vintage clothes and other jobs till I got back to it.

It’s the jacket.

Maybe not totally, as the idealised women of that era were… robust.

But a short bolero jacket, cut with extra wide shoulders and huge leg-o-mutton sleeves, flatters absolutely no one.

Aack… I was in the middle of a long reply and it just disappeared! Hoping it shows up!

Edit… I replaced the links and the comment eventually came back …
But it says “awaiting for approval”, which makes no sense, either in grammar or content. … Plus it stays up for a few seconds and disappears.

Possibly it has too many images?

….

Tigressy… You replied to the version with the original images. Thanks…

That method wasn’t working on my tablet at the time. Had I waited I might not have replaced everything. Your comment disappears when the edited comment does.

I don’t think things ever come out of “waiting for approval” mode.

But I had copied the whole comment…
Hah, WordPress!

I’m going to paste it in two sections.
I don’t give up easily.

First half of my edited reply (see my comment below);

Absolutely!

There wasn’t much of an “industry” at the time, as most clothes were still made at home or by dressmakers…

Fashions were known, by this time (1890s) in magazines, but in the 16th century by word of mouth.

When Elizabeth I wore them in the 1500s, I believe they were called “gigot” sleeves (French for leg of lamb)….

comment image

They were on men’s doublets, as well.

By the early 19th century, 1820 or 30, they were called leg-o-mutton sleeves, and portraits show them on dresses with wide, low necklines.

Second half:

By the time of this bicycle ad, they were on everything, but not for men.

Here’s another jacket like the one on our bicyclist, but longer….

They still appear now and then in modern fashion.

Paul Newman, his real life wife, Joanne Woodward, and Robert Wagner.

A few years later, Newman actually became a professional racecar driver. Maybe he was influenced by making this movie.

Good question!

I thought they were all either half cookies or something else decorated with frosting.

But the right-hand one in the middle row definitely has Oreos in it shaped like flippers!

I’m torn on some of these. I think that you can steam the Oreos and reshape them some (I had deep fried Oreos at the fair and they were mushy, not crunchy). The one on the right with the head raised looks more like photoshop to me. It’s not only the “flippers” but getting cake to hold that raised head shape is a neat trick too.

SusanSunshine

I don’t think you can soften and reshape Oreos and maintain the crisply embossed pattern or edges.

Especially not put in the extra little embossed shapes in the pointed end of the Oreo-branded flipper one.

Something else is afoot… or a-flipper?… But I don’t think it’s AI.

Now I’m wondering what.

I’ll send this to my Daughter-in-law. She has 2 rugrats coming up on birthdays (4 & 7) who might really enjoy a cake like this. The basic turtle shell isn’t that hard, but some of the other parts are probably Rice Krispy treats molded on wire armatures with icing over them. The cake under the shell could be any flavor depending on which kid wanted what flavor.

There’s a coffee shop in Clearlake, California, that last time I asked (about 2016), was using “Espressoyourself” as their Wi-Fi password.

You were supposed to buy something to get it… but of course, after that you knew it, and could sit in your car in the parking lot and use it. One reason there’d be 4 customers in the shop and 10 cars outside.

And now you have it, in case you just happen to be in Clearlake looking for a hotspot.

You’re welcome.

….

PS… They may have changed it cos people were always putting in an X instead of the first S. Then again, it helped cut down on misuse. 😁

Do you remember where in Lake County that was? The actual town of Clear Lake?

SusanSunshine

Yes, in Clearlake, on Lakeshore Drive.

Clearlake is the name of the city in Lake County.

Clear Lake is the name of the lake, itself.

I thought so… But my very first sentence says it’s in Clearlake, California.

Your reply asks me whether I remembered where it was in Lake County, and mentions the city of Clear Lake, which doesn’t exist.

That confused me.

Anyway, if you take the main exit off Hwy 53 into Clearlake, you’re already on Lakeshore…

I’d say it’s another mile, on the right, if it’s still there. It, too, has something to do with cats in the name, but I can’t remember it.

It’s an actual coffee shop, just coffee drinks and maybe some overpriced pastries, not a “coffee shop” like Denny’s.

I was staying in Clearlake for a few weeks with no coffeepot or Wi-Fi, so I went there quite a bit.

I’ve only been to Kelseyville a couple of times, and for hours, not days.

It’s a long drive from there to Clearlake just for a cup of coffee!

Oh calm down… we all know Clara would never leave Claude.

Especially since George Clooney probably isn’t about to show up in Cleveland and invite her to cruise on Lake Erie, in his private yacht.

But a girl can dream! Right, Clara?

But what if he did? Would she go?
Probably… if he were inviting her to do some cooking, or babysit his kids.

….

Meanwhile, if you find this puzzling …

I think I can help.

Just find nine differences between the two panels…

and I’ll share my solution!

Okay, Time for an update.
The house i am in is closing on the 30th. I have one months rent in the agreement, so i have until halloween to be out of this place. My loan officer is aiming for a closing of the new place 16th October.
Mostly by myself, i have to move out of this place and into the next in 15 days. Unless the owner lets me start putting stuff in first. That will depend on his insurance.
I’m not going to be able to afford a rental truck even if i could load it and empty it in one day by myself. That means i’m going to be using the van. A whole bunch. At 18 or 19 MPG.
Poor thing is on it’s last legs now so this isn’t going to do it any good at all. Not to mention that it’s going to have to be my daily driver now. The leaf won’t have the range to get from Newport to Lincoln City, but i will still be able to use it to go to and from the north part of town. Parks and grocery shopping. I’m going to need a new used economy car very soon.
The good news on that front is that i might begetting a little left over from my sell of this place to use as a nest egg for car shopping. I’m clearing about $195ish K from the sell and am putting $!80 K down. The remainder is for closing costs. My loan officer is a very nice lady that is looking to save me as much as possible, tweaking here and there, that it’s a real possibility. How much remains to be seen.
The very worst part of all this is that my client has been back and forth to the hospital in the valley three times in two months. As horrid as his situation is, it has hurt me financially. This is not the time to be deciding on food or gas. Or worrying about him as i’m packing. (worried about him constantly now)
The name of the GoFundMe is, help-secure-a-home-for-buddy-and-his-owner. And that is a dot com.
I have posted a link at Cleo and Company dot net. And a link to the place that i am getting.
My park costs and mortgage combined is going to be lower than my present mortgage, so aside from being in need of a car everything is (in the long run, just not right now.) going more forward than back.
I’m going to copy this over to GoComics so i’m going to put the Zwillow and GoFundMe stuff there.
