I didn’t think she ever really wanted to go back to being unknown, or working in a factory. Certainly not to the young man she married as a teenager, to escape orphanages and foster homes.
From what I’ve read, she worked hard to create her image and become famous… But later she did want to escape being a sex symbol, and thought of as a bimbo, with the constant attention from fans and photographers.
She also fought with the studio, because she was held to an old contract, and made far less than other stars.
But she was incredibly ambitious. She always wanted to be a famous, serious actress, respected, and in control of her life. I think one reason she married Arthur Miller was so she’d be taken for an intellectual, not a dumb blonde.
The woman is artist Agnes Denes, who planted a two-acre wheatfield on some of the most urban, and expensive acreage in the world, Battery Park landfill in Manhattan. Full of trash, that plot still was valued at over 2 billion dollars an acre.
She was aided by the Public Art Fund of New York City, in acquiring its use for 4 months, until the what was mature, at which point she harvested it, and sent it to various food banks.
That land is all developed today, worth many more billions, but can no longer grow food.
I know we’ve seen a lot of banner ladies, but this one cracks me up.
Imagine having nothing to model but bedsprings!
Actually, in those days, it wasn’t quite as silly as it seems to us today. In the 19th century, people did buy bedsprings… usually already set in a frame, a larger version of the small model she’s displaying.
Innerspring mattresses were a 20th century invention. In the 1800’s, you had a thin pad stuffed with anything from corn husks to cotton, or fancy wool, depending on your means, and if you could afford it, a set of springs lay between that and the bed slats.
But still…. You gotta love her “springy” curls… the topknot looks ready to receive coded messages from the Venusians…. and the bandolier that makes her back look like a dinosaur.
This would seem to be from a manufacturer, not a merchant. I wonder if she rode the bicycle around town to stand in from of various stores.
Her slightly cross-eyed expression adds to the goofy effect
It says to stop overcooking, but several of the times given are too long, and a few should say “variable”.
For instance, you cook pasta as long as the package says for that shape.
8 to 10 minutes is way too long for fresh corn on the cob… As soon as it’s thoroughly hot it’s done. It’s better cooked quickly in the microwave anyway… 3 minutes an ear, in the lightly trimmed husk, unless you’re making a few dozen for a crowd, and need them ready all at once.
Green vegetables shouldn’t be “boiled” anyway, they should be steamed, just until edible, and not put in a big pot of water
I prefer to do that in the microwave, where they come out still green, nutrients intact, and as crisp or tender as you prefer.
Potatoes too
OTOH, six minutes won’t do much to a big ol’ carrot.
I asked the witch doctor and he told me what to say
Ooh ee ooh eee eee
ting tang walla walla bing bang
What does it mean?
Season well, and boil until tender
Stolen from (I think it was) a Bob Hope show where they were standing in a pot of water over a fire, and surrounded by cannibals.
Cleo seeing a psychiatrist… I’d say “therapist”, to be less specific, but in Toonland, he’s definitely wearing a psychiatrist suit.
One reason we love cartoons is that they present such a nice, orderly universe, so we know everybody’s place, and often, occupation… who to boo, who to root for, and who to laugh at, without hurting anybody’s feelings.
One thing I don’t know is what Cleo thinks she can get out of this encounter. She’s not exactly the type to just spill her guts without recompense. Someone, somewhere, is making her do this, to get some sort of reward, to stay out of jail, or whatever… and she’ll play it for all it’s worth.
However, even if she’s just playing along, I can tell there’s a difference in her world already. Nine of them, in fact.

Yeah, I wish I could be up there flying, too.

I wonder how many times she wished she could go back to who she was in this picture?

She even started her own studio.

Only shameful if you miss that easy shot (like I usually do). 🙂
Now friends, ya got Trouble . . .

David Saville.. The song anyhow.
Just himself, and later as his alter ego(s) The Chipmunks.

Hey! I know that doggie… well, not personally…. but I know her identity.
I just don’t know whether I’m allowed to blow her cover.
I should do a “Nighthawks”, where he starts with
(when that particular picture du jour refuses to load)
Then we all follow up with
???

Ooooh!
Shhhhh!
As I understand it, he puts the dot because sometimes WordPress, which is fickle, won’t load an image into a field with no text.
I haven’t experienced it myself because I always seem to have something to say 😀

I’m sure I know the answer…
But I’m instituting a new policy: no math solutions before I go to bed. It gets me in trouble
I knew that. But after yesterday’s goof, I’m trying to make myself wait to say it
Happened to me today – misread the number of pills at first.
It would depend upon when you start, for example if the doctor has already given you a first dose.

Is this the “Men’s” edition?
I believe I have found all nine. This probably means there are ten.

Excelsior!
An easier one, after last weeks stinker! 😉
I did find the nine.
Yes!
