An American Red Cross “refreshment unit”, on 5th Avenue, in NYC, during WWI.
I wondered why the Red Cross would be ministering to the fashionable types who strolled New York’s already most upscale shopping area, when the pressing need was overseas.
It turns out that they had several in areas where they could reach people able to help with the war effort. They were demonstrating what they did, rallying support, collecting donations of money and supplies, and recruiting young men.
Getting out in front of people was very effective, in those days, long before television, when not every home had a radio, and of course there was no internet. It was easy to ignore the newspaper, but not these earnest volunteers.
Close. Omar is the figure approaching on horseback. The other character on the far right has about 10 seconds to live after Omar‘s character pulls off the greatest shot from a horse in the history of gun shooting.
The doomed characters name I don’t know… he was Lawrence’s guide to the well, as it turned out
I had just written a reply to this last night when the site went down…. ..I had just assumed it was that movie, and it is, according to my search, but nobody specifically identified the men in it.
I think your Star 1 is indeed the fellow on the left, and Star 2 might be the one riding in, cos he tends to wear black. But don’t bet on it.
One of the search results was a link to a verrry slow trailer for the movie, showing this image in the thumbnail…. but when I watched it, there was only about 2 seconds of this scene, in which the guy on the left walks over to the one on the right and I think says “and I’m going to give it to them”. Just in case that’s a clue to anybody.
In comments, people were saying this was an incredibly long “entrance”, presumably for the fellow on the horse, though maybe not…. but David Lean had wanted to make it even longer.
His mother is going to be very upset with him when he gets home covered in mud like that. They might even take him out back and hose him off before they think about letting him in the house.
Okay… Bearing in mind that everything I know about sports wouldn’t fill a… a… gosh, I can’t think of anything small enough.
I looked this up. People talk about this stuff in some kind of shorthand that I don’t know, leaving half of it out.
This is the most informative caption I ran into:
“Jim Taylor Packers carries at ’49 Kezar Stadium San Fran 1960”
Most others left half of that out.
So… correct me if I’m wrong, but this would seem, then, to be Jim Taylor, of the Green Bay Packers, carrying the ball against the SF 49ers at Kezar Stadium, in 1960.
Right?
(Kezar stadium, AFAIK was the former, former home of the 49ers.)
Much of the commentary was about how now you can’t see this any more, due to artificial turf and better drainage, and most were lamenting that fact.
At first glance, I thought he looked like the fellow sharing a seesaw with Superboy, above.
.
Yes, I tasted the “senior kibble”!

Looks lke a “Flash Gordon” movie.
…
That’s too much for one little mama to handle.

….
It certainly looks like a scene fromTITLE? Lawrence of Arabia, not that that was the only movie ever filmed in the desert. I can’t tell, from behind, if that is

Giraffes have such pretty faces.

Great hands, great catch! Ozzie Smith couldn’t have done it better.
Whew!
I can just imagine the mother’s instant panic!
Heck, I panicked and I don’t even know them.

Dad called games like that “Pig Bowls”.
,,.
Aw… Come on in. It’s okay.
Can I get you anything?
Bowl of water? Belly rub?
I don’t have any kibble, but I could get some tomorrow… first we need to find out if your family is looking for you.
,..,
Will the next storm be the one that finishes the job?
I guessed him, and I’m not sure why.
Maybe cos I’ve seen pictures from a few years later… but by then he doesn’t look quite the same.
Same here. I knew who, but I don’t know why.
I got nothin’.
Whoa! Cute little guy, wasn’t he?
…
,.,
Well, it IS bear spray.
,.,
Ow!
That looks dangerously close.

Purple Finch.
He looks more crimson than purple to me. Crimson as in rage.
OK – joined the club.
Page was down for me until a few minutes ago for about two hours?
I was still looking things up and posting, some time after midnight, when the page decided not to accept my comments…
I went back to yesterday, cos I had something still to say there… but no.
When I came back to today, it had disappeared, and was still gone well after 2am, when I went to sleep.
Nighthawks, I think WordPress owes you a refund!
What if this site dispensed vitally important information?
Oh, wait… it does!
