I had trouble tracking down info about this picture… but finally did find this, on a blog about Marsha Hunt… a Hollywood leading lady whose career was derailed.

….

“Disturbed by the actions of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), Hunt and her husband, screenwriter Robert Presnell…. took part in Hollywood Fights Back, a star-studded radio program, protesting HUAC.

The next day she flew with a group of about 30 actors, directors, writers, and filmmakers (including John Huston, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Gene Kelly, Paul Henreid, Richard Conte, Evelyn Keyes, June Havoc, and Danny Kaye), to Washington to protest.

When she returned to Hollywood three days later…. she was asked to denounce her activities if she wanted to find more work – she refused.”

….

I believe this photo is from the departure of that flight. Marsha Hunt was blacklisted, and ended up in obscurity, practically forgotten.

Very cute, nice artwork… a popular sort of composition for its time.

I guess you’re not supposed to spend too much time thinking about why two matching Scotties (also a popular concept for the time) would each be bringing a young boy a large package of Alka-Seltzer…

Which BTW shouldn’t be given to children, anyway, but they may not have known that yet in the 50s.

I noticed that the cat alters the paw with which he gives benediction as each person enters the house.

Reminded me of that too.

Maneki Neko… Japanese “beckoning cat”, bringing good fortune.

A mystery… Do you know the answer?:

I was told by Asian friends years ago, none of whom I’m in contact with any more, because I’m not in San Francisco, that you should cover one of their eyes.

My friend May was given a huge one for her Japanese restaurant back in the 70s, and wouldn’t display it till she made it an eye patch. But .. I can’t remember why.

So I’ve tried looking it up much more recently on the Internet, and found nothing, not even a picture of one in an eye patch. Daruma, yes. Maneki Neko, no

Yet you can go into Asian markets here, Chinese, Japanese, and Thai restaurants and even some non Asian shops, and see them, quite often with an eye patch or even black tape over one eye.

How to complicate arithmetic in half a dozen silly diagrams, while teaching no basic understanding.

If you teach tricks instead of concepts, you end up with adults who can’t figure out that something went wrong if they mess up the trick, and 2700 isn’t the correct answer.

Yes, I’ve seen it.
Tutoring math to ill-taught adults can be very funny (though sad) but you absolutely cannot laugh.

The quick way I was taught many years ago:

Multiply the denominators together to get a common denominator, multiply each numerator by the opposite denominator, add the two (For the top example) new numerators together, and simplify if improper, or needed (Subtract RH new numerator from LH new numerator in lower example).

I can remember being taught that the plus sign becomes a multiply sign when viewed on the diagonal, which is how to remember what to do.

I agree. tricks are nice, but if one doesn’t understand WHAT is going on, the answer appears like magic and the person doesn’t know WHY the answer is what it is.

I recently saw John Forgerty in concert; he sounds GREAT! He was with a new Creedence Clearwater Revival (including his sons. He had just rerecorded all of his songs so he now owns the rights.

Looking at what other workers are wearing, I’m guessing the guys in foreground are either quality control or management.

Going with the theme, on the back of the vehicle it probably says, “We fix cat-astrophies”!

The Manhattan Bridge, unfinished, above, in 1908… the results I got all said the bottom view, with the finished bridge, was “now”… but without a year attached.

It was actually completed and opened to traffic in 1909, according to some sites, 1911, according to others.

It crosses the East River, between Manhattan and Brooklyn… but it isn’t the Brooklyn Bridge, which does the same, and not far away.

Hey, there are lots of people going back and forth… I guess they need two bridges. This one is described as the “newer” bridge, because the Brooklyn bridge was finished in the late 19th century.

I surprised myself! I looked at the two pictures and said ‘Manhattan Bridge’ to myself before I read your info Susan.

I didn’t!

I was unfamiliar with the Manhattan Bridge.

I do love cats, and I know we have lots of cat lovers here on this forum…

But I’m allergic to them, and my body overreacts to antihistamines and other allergy medication, so my feline-centered interactions have to be a certain amount limited.

I’ve heard they have cat cafes in Japan… probably other places too, and they can be a lot of fun, even for people like me who can’t keep a kitty at home. A chance to play with them.

But, sorry, this restaurant seems to be going just a little overboard. Cats in my lap and especially sitting on the table next to my food just wouldn’t work for me. But you do you.

While you’re at it, do the puzzle too!

Then you can compare the TEN differences you found….

with the ones in my solution!

Hope we’re both right!

I took the setting to be not a restaurant, but the young lady’s home. Cats and coffee are her twin passions.

Hmmm… maybe you’re right.

All the signs made me think it was a restaurant, but none of them are actually promoting any food.

I suppose in her own home she can have all the cats she wants at the breakfast table, though in some places, local ordinances technically disagree.

I say technically because I’m told we have a limit here of 4 cats per household on the books, but I’ve had friends who work with a cat rescue group, and sometimes foster a few dozen.

One of my closest friends, who sadly passed away in 2022, and her husband, at one point I remember had 35 kittens in their house, along with their mamas, a couple dozen other adult rescues, and eight cats they considered their own pets.

No…. they weren’t cat hoarders. All the cats were well cared for… the group worked with volunteer vets… and cycled through adoption programs, once neutered and treated, if need be.

In Norfolk VA the law said “Four 4-legged animals max in a house.” I had 5 cats at the time but wasn’t in violation of the law because one cat only had 3 legs. She was caught in a trap in Idaho and the leg had to be removed. She was a very sweet cat.

As to the differences, I got my customary X – 1.

You could make it 11 and be right as well.

Did you find an 11th?

One that’s NOT #11… SPOILER!

I thought some people might want to call it 11 because the signature is moved… So in panel 2, it’s “missing” under the table and “new” near a cat’s tail

But we’ve tried to make it clear over the years that one object moving is one difference.

I’ve seen Cat Cafes in MI & NY. They don’t serve food, and probably not drinks either (unsanitary).
