That didn’t explain much… so I looked farther…

May or may not be totally factual, but sounds possible enough….
Supposedly Frank Worth, who took this and lots of celebrity and press photos, was taking pictures for Singer cars… He took one of Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor with this one, but he wanted something more dramatic, so he’d make the cover of Motor magazine.
He invited his friend, Sammy Davis Junior to pose with Marilyn… She’s wearing a glamorous gown from the movie, so he called it also a publicity picture for her, even though Davis wasn’t in it.
I didn’t think anybody would have presented it as reality in the nineteenth century, much less the twenty-first.
That idea was believed by some early culture(s) – the Greeks maybe? I should Google it… that had discovered blood vessels and some organs, but didn’t know how most of them worked.
I’m guessing the Greeks, and the Romans, as well, because they were the ones who thought emotions and thoughts originated in the heart, not the brain. That’s why we still use that metaphor. It’s enhanced by the fact that your heartbeat can indicate certain emotions… But it can’t think.
Anyway, we all know now that the veins in the body connect like branches of a tree, smaller ones to larger, peripheral ones to the next closest to the middle… There’s no vein that goes straight from a finger to the trunk, and if there were, it wouldn’t be just one finger.
Some cultures, including ours, do say we wear a ring on the left side because it’s closer to the heart, but that’s more sentimental than physiological…. and besides, the custom was in place long before the sentiment was created to “explain” it.
Some countries and cultures wear wedding rings on the right hand, or the middle finger, or not at all…. they don’t all use different charts of the circulatory system.

I never wanted to see the movie because of that… But I finally watched it years later on TV… and it made me cry all over again. Makes me wonder whether Claude, who was 10 when he played the part, was affected by it too.
I almost could have asked him. He was the director of the San Francisco Film Festival, when I had my shop there, and I ended up meeting him briefly. But I’d forgotten the child actor’s name and didn’t find out till later that they were the same person.
I remember one time when Lassie had a litter of pups (I know, the dog was actually a male) and Grandpa hosted a contest to win one of the pups. I hope they vetted the potential winners.
Pal, the dog who played Lassie in the movies, was very valuable, and his offspring were also trained and used in the movies.
He started in the first couple of episodes on TV, but the his son, and then his grandson, played Lassie in succeeding episodes… It went on for 15 or 20 years.
Oh… I guess they could also have given away a collie pup, that wasn’t actually related to Pal.
