They’re actual Halloween costumes, from the days before ready-made costumes or kids all wanting to be the same superhero or licensed character.
I tried to find a date, but, while it was on a bunch of sites, most just said old or vintage. Two sites said “Victorian”, but I’d say that can’t be true. There’s synthetic material, and what looks like much later rubber boots.
They’re called Amazon river dolphins…. and …surprise!… they inhabit the Amazon River, actually the Amazon and Orinoco basins, and other tributaries and smaller rivers of South America.
They’re the largest species of dolphins in the world… males can be 9ft long and 400 lbs!
They’re born dark grey, and get lighter and pinker as they mature. Adult makes are pinker than females, and even more so as they age.
Unfortunately, they’re also endangered, though conservation efforts are started.
I couldn’t find a date for this picture… a few details make me think it could be very old, like 1870s.
I’ve seen costumes from the 1890s .. even as witches or clowns or bats, the ladies tend to wear tight corsets and big puffy sleeves.
Of course, these could be after that era, maybe early 20th century…
but the detail work on the first jacket, and the second skirt, the downward curve of the ruffle in front, and the care put into those giant hats, really look like the post civil war fashions of the late 1800’s, before 1890.
In which case, they could be Halloween costumes, but there were also groups of women that emulated witches covens… more as social gatherings than to practice real witchcraft.
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with all nine of their children, taken May 26th, 1857.
From left to right: Alice, Arthur (later Duke of Connaught), The Prince Consort (Albert), The Prince of Wales (later Edward VII), Leopold (later Duke of Albany, in front of the Prince of Wales), Louise, Queen Victoria with Beatrice, Alfred (later Duke of Edinburgh), The Princess Royal (Victoria) and Helena
Victoria said at various times that she disliked pregnancy, found babies uninteresting, and breastfeeding vulgar and disgusting … yet she adored Albert, and considered having children her duty, both to him and to England.
Amazingly, for the time, she had no complications, no miscarriages or stillbirths, and all nine of their children lived into adulthood, though Prince Leopold died as a young man of the hemophilia that ran through the royal family for generations.
Okay, I found it… though, once again, I’m tempted to say “if that’s a ___ (fill in the blank), I’m the Princess of Mars.”
But of course I wouldn’t say that, lest it be a spoiler… which it shouldn’t be, really, cos these creatures never seem to look like what they’re said to be.
If you want to know where I found it…
Go to the word “iguana”, and drop a straight line from the “a”, to about a quarter of the way down from the top of the puzzle. It doesn’t hurt to use a drawing program, or just hold a business card or a ruler, to make sure it’s straight….
You’ll be pointing at the top of its head. It doesn’t have a while eyeball, and looks a bit like a green rubber ducky.
The 10 tsp of sugar, about 39g, is for a 12oz can, which is also the contents of a tall bottle of Mexican Coke… those are popular here because they’re made with real sugar, not high fructose corn syrup.
This bottle looks like an 8 ouncer…
The bad news is that 8oz still contains 26g of sugar, which is supposed to be the daily limit for a woman.
The worse news is that fast food cups of coke are often way bigger… teenagers walk around with 32oz cups. Usually they fill them half full of ice… but not always. And they get refills.
32 oz of Coke contains over 100g of sugar.
There’s some hyperbole in this chart, but the fact remains that a growing body that fills up on 100g of sugar will probably not eat enough protein and vitamins.
The house looks well-maintained but the grounds are a tad overgrown, no?

FWIW, I have been able to watch the animations at the top for at least the past few months. I’m not complaining about posting them again in the comments, or questioning that some folks need those. Just sayin’.
I’ve never had a problem with it, except for a brief time when they didn’t work for anyone.
Apparently they don’t work in some systems.
But even though they animate fine on top, I like the re-posts in the comments, cos it reminds me to comment on them.
Sometimes I get so wound up in going down the page, replying to posts, and googling images, I forget to comment on anything that isn’t right there in my face.

Great explosion effect 🙂
Just shows you how much robots care about humans.
When they figure out how to generate their own electricity and make their own chips, we’ll be extraneous… and they’re programmed for efficiency.
Question: Will AI continue to make what passes for art, when there are no more human brains to enjoy it?

Boy, if he’s not named “Winston,” somebody missed the boat.

Really great costumes if they’re not late add-ons.

Homemade paper maché masks weren’t as common post-WWII, and by the 50s it was Ben Cooper costumes in a box from the dime store…
I’m guessing 1930s, maybe early 40s…. Anybody?

I think this is St. Patrick’s on 5th Avenue…
But how did that fellow fit on an airplane to fly all the way from the UK with a tree growing out of his head?

Are pink dolphins something that drunk sailors see?
Wow… Apparently they exist!

No, I do appreciate the offer…. but I have to… um…. go… somewhere… and uh…. do something.
I’m pretty sure it’s… yeah….in my appointment book… in the car…. and I have to… to… I have to go back and find it.
And I think I’m running late.

I mean, I like purple as much as the next guy… or, uh… girl… but there’s just something…. you know…
Yes, i have TWO lighthouses in town.
..
And I’ve been to them both.
And you didn’t stop and say hi to Happy³?
Two questions….
Are they still functioning lighthouses?
And….
Can you go inside?
