This is Mr. B’s Hamburgers, in Seattle WA, taken in 1954.
From the comments on a Seattle Facebook page, it was a popular teen hangout.
A good thing for Mr. B, I guess… but teenagers are notoriously lousy tippers. Too young to understand working hard for a living, and having bills to pay.
Yeah yeah…. your dad worked two jobs, or maybe you worked at a soda fountain yourself… I didn’t say every teenager didn’t get it…
But the chances are that these ladies got a lousy wage and few tips.
As a 19 or 20 year old college student, I worked at an Orange Julius for about a year.
There was a law that halved the minimum wage for students, which meant we got $1.25 an hour. I was a good worker, and my bonus for that was more shifts, not a raise. I’d be surprised if my tips for the year totaled $25.
Sounds almost the same, but if you ever had to take them to court over a cracked foundation, it would make a big difference.
It’s really hard to prove a lack of resistance… That cement could have been stomping its little feet and trying really hard to resist cracking…. but we never said it would succeed.
It’s like watches… They used to say waterproof but now they’re water resistant. IE don’t come crying to us if it drowns.
And it has levels… My watch said water resistant to I think 50 meters on the box (the lowest level). Inside, in the instructions, it says that means “light rain.” 50 meters underwater is light rain??
Then again, maybe crack resistant cement just says no to cocaine.
My brother’s over-exuberant super-affectionate mostly-curly-coated retriever pup had to be trained out of this.
She did it going up as well…. And even when you were just standing on level ground. She thought running between your legs was teamwork, and pushing you was participation.
She also thought sitting on the toilet meant you wanted your face licked, and maybe a 25 pound pup in your lap, and she had a hard time understanding that you could make a sandwich that wasn’t for her.
Luckily, she was sweet, and smart, and she did mostly learn to behave… leaving room for a small surprise now and then, just to keep you on your toes.
She was a rescue, so of course her breed was a guess… but it seemed like a pretty correct one. Curly-coated retrievers are like bouncy, friendly, labs on steroids, and she fit the description, but her curls were looser than their lamb-like coats.
I’ve been looking for a reliable platform like this for a while. The interface is super smooth and everything loads quickly. Highly recommend phrotowire for anyone starting out!

She’s got her work cut out for her.

It was probably a tough job, but those 10 cent and 25 cent tips add up!
And that went further than today.

Nope!
If that showed up at your door on Halloween, there’s a sizable percentage of the US population that would shoot it.

Our reactions are funny, cos if she weren’t wearing that creepy mask, she’d just be a cute young toddler in a baby dress.

Thought it might have been the Andrea Gale for a moment, but checked photos and she was a different type.

This is why you read labels carefully….
It’s “crack resistant“, not crack-proof.
