Last night when I was looking for the Black Cat images, I found out that advertising photos like that, featuring women decked out in merchandise, were sort of a fad in the late 19th century.
The women were called “banner ladies”.
I only noticed late that the one advertising Black Cat cigarettes had cigarettes and cigarette packs attached to her hair, clothing, and sign.
Anyway… I was rather charmed by another one I found:
I have to say that her costume is certainly memorable if not appealing. I do hope she was emphatically instructed not to run while wearing it.
