Didn’t find much about this particular postcard, except that one site dated it 1918, which looks about right.
The amazing thing is that the downtown portion of Mission Street, which includes the part shown on this card, was pretty much destroyed in the huge 1906 earthquake.
What wasn’t knocked down, which was a large percentage, varying by block, was gutted and ruined in the massive fires that followed the shaking.
Mission is parallel to Market, the main downtown street, one block south of it. Before the earthquake, there were fancy hotels there… It never quite regained its upscale status…
But still, here we are, 12 years later, with tall buildings again.
Actually, in this one, for a change, I’m not surprised. They pretty much look the same color, a little lighter on the right, though I know they’re not.
I was just wondering what a “town barrow” might be…. when I realized that maybe, just maybe…
they meant to say “in the town of Barrow, Alaska…”
If so, it’s now called Utqiagvik. Try to say that 6 times quickly.
Or, what the heck…. once, slowly.
The former Barrow is north of the Arctic Circle…. one of the northernmost cities and towns in the world and the northernmost in the United States, close to Point Barrow, the country’s northernmost point.
Only 2 of them have the right innies and outies (what DO you call them on a puzzle piece?) in the right orientation…
The other is #5, but on that one her eye is facing the wrong direction, and the bottom bump (?) is on her face when it needs to be blue.. And his shoulder is missing.
He’s standing next to a giant cardon cactus (Pachycereus pringlei) in Baja California, Mexico.
It’s considered the largest cactus species in the world, up to 60 feet (18 meters) tall, and can live for several hundred years.
In my search, no one definitively IDed the bird with the huge nest on top, but it was said to be “probably” an osprey, cos they’re known to nest on cardon cacti. Obviously I didn’t run into any ornithologists.
Surely a shore/wading bird – long beak for poking into the water or weeds, not a raptor. At this distance, an osprey would look like a hawk or eagle probably.
I’ve been to Indio… long ago but not that long ago… but I never saw that bridge, not that I knew to look for it… And it probably wasn’t there yet anyway.

Not sure what you mean… But if it’s that these were still there in 1918 cos they survived the earthquake..

Or if you mean this time they built them earthquake proof… they certainly tried.
They didn’t yet have the technology.. but I know there were hotels that advertised “New! Earthquake-proof and fire-proof rooms.”

Never made it THAT far north. I did spend a long weekend in Nome once. But not during the dark winter.
And heating bills are higher than average.
But they really save in the Summer! 67 days of 24 hour sunshine!

Osprey is a raptor. That looks more like a wading bird. (IMHO)
