Yes. Since my father had bought it from the world-famous company he had retired from, he sent away the repair-man my mother had called (the fridge-freezer combination was still under warranty, but heated instead of cooling), ridiculing her.
As soon as he had passed away, we bought a very good combo from another company and never had any problems with that.
I went through it sort of recently, as refrigerator lifetimes go.
In late 2023, I had COVID… I think I mentioned it here.
I wasn’t allowed out of quarantine for weeks because my fever keep returning and I couldn’t get a negative test… the two criteria for it’s being considered over.
Luckily, I’d had all my vaccinations and I was put on Paxlovid right away… The doctors said that’s why it didn’t have a lot of respiratory symptoms and didn’t turn into long COVID. But it just didn’t want to go away.
When I was sickest, my refrigerator suddenly stopped. I can’t say it stopped cold, cos it stopped warm.
It was very annoying, because it was only 40 years old. Really!
Everything in it was ruined.
I couldn’t go shopping for a fridge… I barely sneaked out to get groceries and pick up the Paxlovid when I was supposed to be home in quarantine. Luckily I had lots of canned stuff.
Anyway, finally I got a new fridge. I won’t mention the brand except it rhymes with…um… Rigid Air. After a couple of weeks, it quit.
Everything in it was ruined.
It was under warranty… but guess what… They don’t cover the food!
And they don’t replace it.. they send repair people. It’s all in the fine print.
The repair people the …um… Rigid Air company… uses for warranty work are clowns. They supposedly work for Sears, which is basically defunct, but they repair all those lifetime appliances people (thought they) bought. I wish them luck.
Various members of the clown troupe came back and repaired my NEW fridge at least 5 times. Some were very nice…. but they’d get here and the last guy would have ordered the wrong part.
It would work for a week or a month, and quit again. Then they’d make a new appointment with me for weeks later, show up on the wrong day, or they’d send the wrong people. Once a baffled HVAC tech asked me why they sent him.
I yelled, I threatened lawyers… But the contract says six repair attempts before replacement. Finally the warranty was about to run out and they acted to replace it. Almost a year after I bought it.
They sent one a little smaller than it’s supposed to be, but I said okay because I didn’t want to wait another six weeks. That was a year and a half ago…. So far it’s doing great
It’s going to do great for years, aren’t you, my pet refrigerator?
I have faith.
I had the same result with my dishwasher. After five visits from four techniciains, all diagnosing the same problem and replacing the same part twice, they replaced the machine with a cheaper version. No complaints, at least it worked!
Companies today seem to provide promises and warranties that they don’t care whether they honor, and hire anybody who walks in the door to be a technician.
Had I paid for the 3 year extended warranty, which cost half the price of the fridge, it would have been the same clowns, and a lot longer till I got a replacement.
The good news is, at least a broken dishwasher, AFAIK, doesn’t ruin your dishes or affect your ability to store food.
I not only lost the food in the old fridge, but after 2 months of canned food, I gleefully filled up the new one. All lost .
After that, I bought small amounts, as a test… but kept losing them, till I finally decided to not use it till it was repaired.
Almost a year with very little fresh food, except some produce and some cheese that I could keep for a while without one.
I’m not even supposed to eat canned food cos of the salt…
It’s the little extra bits of description that I didnt do…
If I had a sort of boom box, but never carried it on my shoulder, or blasted tunes like an idiot, or worried that my VHS would jam,… If I rented VHS tapes at a nearby little store, not Blockbuster, on a Tuesday, or my dictionary was used too much to be dusty… do I say yes or no?
If it’s “yes”, I did everything but 8 and 12… I’ve never owned a Walkman, and I don’t think I’ve recorded off the radio.
Oh… And I owned an encyclopedia set from a thrift store, complete except for I think 2 volumes (&#@$!)(but that’s why it was $1.50). But not a whole collection, if that means more than that.
My “walkman” was a cheap Radio Shack knockoff. But it went everywhere with me. Even out on the fishing boat, where it was snugly ensconced in a Tupperware container with just the headphone cord poked through a tiny hole. And yes, it would have floated, if it went overboard.
What I want to know is whether that drawing goes under the paint, or is a separate “study.” Wait… It must be separate, cos he signed it in the corner “to (somebody) Erickson (I think) Best wishes”.
I’ve never understood how somebody can make a precise sketch, and then a separate painting that follows it exactly.
Similar concepts are used in sculpture. Pencil sketches from multiple angles; form, shape, scale, etc. all start there. Then the modeling, often several models in increasing scale sizes. Many artforms seem to require multiple talents. And time. Lots of time.
Yeah… I know the purpose and intent of sketches, and of drawing on a grid…. I’ve done them myself.
I’ve seen Old Master charcoal studies, and watched artists on TV…. I understand the concept of testing the layout, watching for proper form and light and balance.
But copying the sketch precisely onto the canvas, as Rockwell does in this example, seems almost as difficult as “copying” the real life model into the sketch.
I’ve never seen an artist transfer the grid lines onto the canvas…. maybe some do.
Some artists do a sketch, and you can see that the the lines have changed between that and the finished product, as though the sketch were only a suggestion.
But Rockwell’s sketch is almost exactly the same as the painting. He added a button to the trousers, removed the handle(?) from the fishing pole… cut the hair a bit shorter in back… tiny details. (Hey it’s an FTD puzzle.)
But to get every line and angle and basic shape identical… That’s what’s beyond me.
I guess that’s why he’s Norman Rockwell and I’m not.
Nonetheless, I would happily send 15¢ for a Tom Mix signal arrowhead…. even if the postage is 78¢, and I have to choke my way though a box of tasteless shredded wheat.
I promise I’ll eat it, and won’t buy it just for the prize… and I’ll do my chores every day and go to bed on time, and I won’t fight with my sister or forget it’s my turn to feed the dog.
That code was used in the old bb forums and it was as the name suggests …a marquee text that scrolls across the screen from right to left like we used to see on theater marquees.
We had marquee text, when we could do HTML for a while on GoComics… I don’t remember the code, but i don’t think it was that one.
We also could do borders, different backgrounds, fonts and colors, and import sound files, along with videos and images.
I learned that stuff on a site called W3Schools or some such, that taught HTML… But it’s been at least 10 years since GoComics dropped support for our fun and games, so I’m rusty.
The last time I used a MARQUEE command was on one of my GeoCache hides a few weeks ago:
<span><marquee behavior=”alternate” width=”80%”><marquee direction=”right”>Congratulations to named person for FTF</marquee></marquee></span>
Never tried it here.
Wow. I didn’t read the title above the photo, but was thinking “clearly Colorado”. I haven’t been to that lake, but I’ve been in many similar places there.

I never had a boom box.
I had a boombox , but I never carried it on my shoulder.
Mine was too big and my shoulders too small. Which is good, because I still have my hearing (well, other than the stinkin’ tinnitus.)
It’s the little extra bits of description that I didnt do…

I still have my 1904 “Cassell’s Cabinet Cyclopedia” Great for looking up 19th century “facts…”
Yes to everything except the boom box and Walkman
Yes to all, save for some of the associated movements not being performed…
Does Mom and Dad’s encyclopedia set count? I mean, I never had them myself, but sure grew up with them.
Same here….I think it counts.
As an aside, I spent a lot of time pouring over those 1954 versions.
Nope to 8,9 and (especially) 11. Everything else, though!

A very famous scene, with a live lion, from the 1919 silent film.
Let Gloria herself tell you about it…. 61 years later (it’s less than 3 minutes):
Very interesting, thanks for finding it.

Even his pencil drawings are amazing.

I’ve never understood how somebody can make a precise sketch, and then a separate painting that follows it exactly.
That’s what those squares in the sketch are for.
We’ve done that at art education from photographs in college-like classes.
the sketch is like a roadmap….eliminates any nasty layout and balance surprises that might crop up in the actual application of oil paint on canvas,,
Similar concepts are used in sculpture. Pencil sketches from multiple angles; form, shape, scale, etc. all start there. Then the modeling, often several models in increasing scale sizes. Many artforms seem to require multiple talents. And time. Lots of time.

I’ve got 15 cents!
Where can I get a Shredded Ralston box top?
Cutting out the coupon won’t hurt my tablet, will it?
If I remember correctly , Ralston cereals were pretty much high fiber, low taste
besides, they never put prizes inside each box–cool stuff like Navy frogmen or a submarine
like these!
I always got the guy with the dumb limpet mine!
Nonetheless, I would happily send 15¢ for a Tom Mix signal arrowhead…. even if the postage is 78¢, and I have to choke my way though a box of tasteless shredded wheat.

Honest!
BTDT!!!
Ralson-Purina. They turned into dog food!
They still make some cereal, only Ralston-Purina is owned by Nestle, and I think all the brands are somewhere on the package.
OH. MOM! I gotta have one! Please? Please? Please??

What I found harder was how to do the spoiler box … it;’s been a while since I played with [xxx] [/xxx]. does [marquee] [/marquee] still work ?
I’m not sure what that code does… But you did it somehow!
WordPress doesn’t let you use your own html unless you use the edit button to code your whole comment.
In case that’s what you did… We just use the [+] at the end of the black toolbar at the bottom of the commenting window.
It gives you a pop-up window for the title, ie, whatever you want showing, and brackets in which to place the content you want to hide.
I find it easier to type that “hidden” content first, and highlight it… Then clicking [+] will build the brackets around it in the proper place.
Other people use the button to create the code, then type between the brackets.
HTH
That code was used in the old bb forums and it was as the name suggests …a marquee text that scrolls across the screen from right to left like we used to see on theater marquees.
Oh!
I thought you meant it was for doing a spoiler.
We had marquee text, when we could do HTML for a while on GoComics… I don’t remember the code, but i don’t think it was that one.

I learned that stuff on a site called W3Schools or some such, that taught HTML… But it’s been at least 10 years since GoComics dropped support for our fun and games, so I’m rusty.
I don’t think WordPress allows much either.
