Kishke, or kishka, is something I never expected to see at a hamburger stand. A stuffed piece of beef or other intestine, baked or boiled.

But this is obviously a Jewish neighborhood…. Pitkin Avenue in the Brownville neighborhood of Brooklyn, 1950 or 53, depending on who’s labeling it, and kishke, at least one kind, is a Jewish dish.

I’ve heard that there’s European kishke with meat or blood, onions, barley, and the like… but the kishke I know is stuffed with matzoh meal, schmaltz(poultry fat) and seasoning. Very rich, and tastier than you’d think.

My mother didn’t deal with buying intestines… She only made kishke when we had a turkey, which was Thanksgiving and again at Christmas, and she used the neck skin of the bird. I have no idea whether that’s traditional or not.

She stuffed it and baked it, and my father ate it. Every once in a blue moon we kids got a taste. My mother pretended not to like it when he offered her some, and he didn’t argue, but just enjoyed his prize.

Now I wonder whether there were kishke stands in in Brooklyn when he was growing up there, in the 1920s. Not a question I would have ever thought to ask.

I know you wrote in jest…
But we’ve eaten properly prepared (thoroughly pedicured) chicken feet in South Korea .
One time boneless in Andong, the other time hellish hot on the bone in Seoul. it was a challenge-thing back then, accompanied by soju. Lots of.
We did pretty well…

Shoes for StelBel!

Except for the little problem of being able to walk in them… I know I couldn’t.

Well… maybe either of us could have managed it, in our twenties.

That Montreal smoked meat sandwich is wrong … it’s usually on thinner rye bread which isn’t what’s pictured there. The meat is also sliced way too thick and there’s not enough of it.Smoked meat is always cut in very thin slivers and not cut like bologna slices.

Remember moving screensavers?

Flying toasters, colorful pipes, twisting Window logos… you didn’t want your screen to sit still!

At one point I had teeny cartoon sheep that floated on clouds, fell to earth, and marched around. Came on a floppy from the shareware booth at the computer show.

Floppy? Shareware? Computer show? I’m as bad as Clara and Claude, exvept that I know how to pronounce the words.

Hint that’s not spoilerish enough to hide:

I know they all look sort of panda-ish, or somewhat panda-adjacent…

But I found the actual panda, and I can say that when you see it, you’ll know.

I’ve had quite a day… well, the later part of it anyway.

I wasn’t going to say anything, but I’m not sure I’m holding up my end…..

Late doctor’s appointment. Then back to the lab for blood tests (routine, no big). Grocery store. It got dark.

Driving home, the back way… new “energy saving” street lights don’t light anything… Ran into something I couldn’t see in the road.

Just felt a big bump….car seemed okay, but I pulled into the Walmart parking lot to check…. sure enough, my tire was deflating.

Called AAA. The only guy available at the tow company they dispatched was 25 miles away, almost out to the coast, on another call. Nice woman… Said they only had 2 drivers on the night shift.
But he’ll try to inflate the tire, and if I need a tow, she’ll ask him to drive me home after we drop off the car.

Wow… The company they usually send won’t even let me ride in the truck… I’d have to call an Uber separately to get home, while they drop off the car

So… 40 minutes later, the guy shows up. Very nice guy, but his compressor is broken so he can’t pump the tire. So he calls the other guy… and we wait about 20 minutes for him.

They try to inflate the tire, but it’s broken. So the second guy tows me to my mechanic… Closed, of course… We drop off the car and the key… And he takes me and my groceries home… Only a mile and a half but so nice of him! He even helped carry the groceries, and wouldn’t accept a tip.

When I left this afternoon, I had expected to get home around 7pm, and it turned into 10:30.

I hope I never need another tow, but if I do, I hope they use that company again.

I know that shirt… It’s not really a marijuana commercial 🙂

It says “Get really stoned. Drink wet cement.”
