This was taken on April 28th, 1958. The future King Charles was 10 years old, and Anne not yet 8.

Attenborough was 32, and already working at the BBC, but this was years before his becoming one of Britain’s most recognisable broadcasters. He turned 100 in May, 2026, and is still working.

Disney “directing animator” Eric Larson, drawing some of the live Dalmatian puppies brought to the studio in 1960.

He and the rest of the team of Disney animators made many studies of the pups, before and during production of 1961’s “101 Dalmatians”.

I like this.

But being me, I’m having to stop myself from wasting time checking every one to make sure they’re really anagrams.

Hey, they tried.

Reminds me of my Dad driving me from Wisconsin to start my freshman year of college in South Dakota, with the rest of the family along for the ride.

A hot September day, and a lot of driving. We stopped at a little cafe just after leaving Iowa… our introduction to South Dakota.

First the waitress asked whether we wanted shoes with our sandwiches. Huh? She had to explain that the local French fries were very thin, and known as shoestring potatoes… or “shoes.”

Then my dad ordered iced coffee.
She brought him a cup of hot coffee. Restaurant cups weren’t mugs in those days, but regular rounded cups.

Dad said sorry, but he’d ordered iced coffee. She looked confused. Leaving the cup in front of him, she walked away, and came back holding two ice cubes in her bare fingers, which she dropped into his steaming cup.

My dad never got over it. He talked for years about the strange restaurants in South Dakota.

I could swear we just had this picture without the elephants.
Am I crazy…. wait, don’t answer that … separate question.

But was it a different picture or did I really not notice a whole herd of elephants?

But it could also be high-quality rapeseed-oil.

Not, or at least The Guardian believes it’s real.
They said, in 2010….

“Photographer Greg du Toit had suffered a year of gruelling, failed attempts to get the perfect wildlife picture near a watering hole in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. So he decided to climb into the water.

Thus began a 270-hour waiting game, at the end of which Du Toit emerged not only with a bad case of malaria but with these spectacular images.”

A happy picture, ca 1900… film had finally gotten fast enough to capture a candid smile or a playful gesture.

A lot of people still posed stiffly, because they didn’t know yet that there was no need to hold still for several minutes… but by this time, we’re starting to see some more light-hearted moments.

Mosaic columns inside the Palau de la Música Catalana, a beautiful concert hall in Barcelona.

It was built in the early 1900s by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, one of the big Modernist architects of the city, and you can still attend concerts there.

Inside there’s a huge stained-glass skylight that floods the hall with natural light.

#6 is obvious… and I wish the rest worked.

I mean, #s 3 and 5 do, to a degree, with the flavor… but only a bit… and your stomach still knows it’s too spicy or acid, if that’s the problem.

Yes, me too.

And after a pretty diligent search, I’m willing to bet that the barbecue grill is really what we’re supposed to be looking for.

The file name for this image includes “Can-YOU-find-the-mouse-hiding-in-this-field-of-mushrooms” … But I don’t see a field of mushrooms, any more than I see a mouse.

I don’t know how it happened, but somehow, the name must have been switched with another puzzle.

A field of mushrooms, somewhere, is probably hiding a mouse, and labeled “Find the barbecue grill”.

Meanwhile, I must say…. One grill for all that stuff… It’s gonna take all day. And there are raw steaks mixed with cooked hotdogs. Some kind of striped pink and red things with tails or bows on one end…. and maybe still the possibility of a mouse hiding in the food.

I don’t think I’m going back to that restaurant.

But find the barbecue grill.

So cheery for a Hopper.
But he did have those… months?

I was going to say moments, but I’ve read that he only produced two or three paintings a year.

Hi nighthawks;
Has WordPress made mention of the “new thumbs-up” addition?
Are they thinking of eliminating the ability to see who gave a comment the “thumbs-up”?

SusanSunshine

Since Nighthawks didn’t answer…. And please, Nighthawks, correct me if I’m wrong… Having a site on WordPress, unless you’re adept at site-building or hire your own web designer, is a sort of multilevel rental. It’s not as user friendly as you might expect.

They’re only a host. They have rules and specifications, but offer links to third parties to handle various features of the layout and design.

When this site was being set up, Nighthawks chose one provider whose set up included thumbs, and later switched to another… I can’t remember exactly what we had for likes, but it was different.

(The background, font, colors, etc come from these providers. At one point we had emoticon responses but they caused problems.)

This new thumb appeared after WordPress “repaired” the site yesterday, so it must come directly from them. I can’t figure out what it does.

I tried it a few times. It seems to give a temporarily red thumb up, which doesn’t change the likes count in the usual thumbs. I decided not to use it because I don’t really know what I’m thumbing up.

I don’t think it can change Nighthawks’ use of the company that’s providing the current thumbs, or its inclusion of names.

I, too, have played around with this new addition. You can place and then remove if need be. Can’t see who gives the thumbs-up.
I’m just thinking that it is strange that it has appeared. And, timing is everything, just happened during a unscheduled outage.
Over at GoComics, they came in with yet another comment-service-provider, another disaster (my opinion). They have only thumbs-up, and there is much angst over there concerning that. And let’s face it, to have comments takes a lot of bandwidth which is costly to provide.
Maybe I’m just jaded from the experiences over at GC.
Maybe nothing to be concerned about.
But no-one thought that November fifth 2024 was going to be anything different….
Ach! Time to take off my conspirator’s hat…

I’d rather have mine cold and sparkling, like Martinelli’s, if that’s okay.

Especially since we’re having another heat wave.

(“We’re having a heat ♪♪ wave.. a tropical heat ♪♪ wave….♪♪♪“)

I love hard cider, but I can’t drink these days.
