Actually, I hate to say, I think it’s pretty.

“Hate” to say, only because I think it’s AI.

There were just too many similar designs, for sale in too many places, with no artist credit, only “design companies”… Some don’t produce your goods until you order.

But yeah, AI can produce some pretty things, even if some have terrifying or creepy mistakes. It’ll get better as time goes on.

But the reason to resist isn’t just the errors and the creepiness.

AI is theft. It doesn’t invent anything! Even if you tell it what you want and it creates a “new” piece of art, it doesn’t know how without being fed a diet of existing artwork, from which to steal.

Lines, colors, techniques, styles, all come from the things it has absorbed and reprocessed.

Different AI programs have been given different content. You think you’re creating with it, when you’re really using other people’s work.

And the artists who actually created those things get no credit, no money… in fact, one day they won’t be able to compete, and they’ll lose the jobs or sales they have… And because AI can only rehash, not create, we’ll be stuck… except for a very few, no one will make anything new.

Most people won’t care, because they can buy a pretty picture of the moon.

Totally agree Susan.
I have an eerily similar rocking moon, picked it up about 30 years ago at a long-closed neighbourhood coffee shop. The eye moves while it is rocking. Set it in motion and it runs for many minutes. It has always mesmerized my daughter and all of our cats, past and present.

Reminds me of this classic logo

I’m not surprised when AI borrows elements of past design.

I’m not saying that particular program has assimilated this particular logo… but all AI programs get all their knowledge from various past designs, making all their work derivative.

This logo may have made its way into some AI, and eventually they all learn from each other, as they are updated… so who knows.

BTW… I don’t know how old you are, so I don’t know whether you remember the 70s or 80s… but there was a huge but silly controversy about this design way back then.

Some people accused P&G of being agents of Satan, because their logo had satanic symbolism… especially the “horns” on this devil-faced moon’s head and “tail.”

There was a lawsuit… I think P&G sued and won… But they ended up changing the logo anyway… If you look at a new package, the ends of the crescent are smoother.

I am old enough to remember but don’t recall hearing about any satanic voodoo with that logo. I do remember liking it so much that I asked my girlfriend to embroider that image on the back of my jean jacket …which she did. It was about 10″ round and perfectly done. Even then I knew how to pick ’em.

Not what you might think, but in New Orleans, the year before.

BTW, it looks terribly retouched, with thin white lines drawn around people to try to make up for the poor resolution.

I applied once for a job doing just that sort of touch up work on B+W negatives. The work was done with special pencils and very tricky to do as demonstrated on the above picture.
I didn’t get the job but went on to bigger and better things.

Famous by what measure… and where?

They can’t mean famous all over the world, unless they all had world wide distribution. Some did… but if some of the others came to the US, it was probably to a few small art houses.

The Rings trilogy was filmed in New Zealand, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly was filmed in Italy… they were co-productions, they weren’t products of those countries’ film industry.

You might as well call Dr. Zhivago a Spanish movie, or take Titanic off the American list and call it a Canadian one. In fact Canada is so often used to sub for American locations, you could say a ton of movies more famous than Incendies are Canadian.

Oh yeah… and it’s hard to believe Russia hasn’t made a more famous movie than a silent film from 1925, great as it was.

This just seems like AI having fun again.

Titanic is described as “Two Lovers fall in love.” Who the what where why how when did that make sense?

I agree that it makes no sense… but where was it described that way?

Broke-back Mountain was more famous than Incendies for a Canadian movie and surely War and Peace was the Russian blockbuster and more recently Stalingrad. (2013)

It gets complicated calling movies the product of a certain country… Brokeback Mountain was filmed in Canada, as was Titanic, an even bigger hit… But both were American productions.

I was comparing that to Lord of the Rings being called a New Zealand movie because it was filmed in New Zealand.

If you mean the epic Soviet era War and Peace, three movies and I think 7 hours long (I saw one part and gave up) in Russian, yes it was a Russian movie..

But the blockbuster War and Peace was the 1956 version with Audrey Hepburn… I believe it was Italian or Italian-American, filmed in Italy.

To me, finding the “most famous” movie from each country is silly, unless you set parameters for “famous” and “from”. Even then, some might be 8mm movies from some tiny country, famous only there.

I’m a 72 year old Canadian, born here, and I’ve never heard of a movie named “Incendies”.
I must live a sheltered life (yeah, I looked up the movie, doesn’t ring any bells, but then again, it is in French and I’m not that conversant)

I hadn’t heard of Incendies either until I read up about it ..Denis Villeneuve of Dune fame made it and probably released only in French

Or anybody rightfully terrified of what kind of mechanical failure makes an elevator stick until you jump on it…

And if it’s so readily moved by jumping on it, what’s going to happen the day 6 people get into it with you?

I’ll take the stairs, thanks anyhow.

Motel elevator form this last weekendds family trip had a big sign:

“NO JUMPING! Jumping can cause the elevator to shut off and you will have to be rescued. Fine of up to $1400.”
