I think I saw them on California Highway 1 not too long ago. Wish we could have stopped to talk a bit more.

No. Not how you do it!
It goes into a hot cast iron skillet.
Break it up while stirring.

Vegetarians aren’t supposed to be funny! They’re supposed to be serious! They’re trying to protect your life!

That’s vegans.
Vegetarians still have to take into account the death of cows and hens.

And I know that brand. Better add some spices to it: ground cumin, garlic and onion powder for a start, some cayenne pepper if you’re up to it. Otherwise it’s just boring!

I like it fairly boring, as a contrast to the spicy stuff on the plate… though the vegetarian ones need a bit more. The best are cooked in lard.

My favorite is Guatemalan refried black beans, which I seldom buy cos they’re hard to find and cost 3 or 4 times as much. They have onion, garlic, and a bit of chili, and a slightly different flavor. I love black beans, anyway.

No cumin.

If you’re cooking dry beans from scratch, put in some epazote, if you have any… it’s what makes real Mexican ones taste different.

But I usually don’t have any, nor do i cook beans from scratch any more.

So I add a little oregano sometimes… and put fresh cilantro in the taco.

Hey, it was a California “hospice”. They had to show that it was actually occupied, at least once. How could they pay for that fancy car otherwise?

It’s a type of salamander.called an olm, and lives in flooded caves in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Italy.

It stays in larval form, pale pink, and blind, with external gills for life.

Because cave water has very little food in it, it has adapted to surviving for years without eating, by slowing its metabolism and reabsorbing its own tissue. By barely moving, it can live 100 years.

Slovenia has put the olm on a coin. It is protected, though its habitat is threatened by groundwater pollution.

I’m not sure that works if you’re in the hospital in, say, New York City, in December, or Dubai, in August.

But you know I would never make such a cruel joke, right?

My son, a DPT dealing with wound care, LVADs, MRSAs and such has taken advantage of that when possible (maybe not sea views) to help his patients. It’s amazing what a little of this type of encouragement can do to help healing.

It’s not like they had a choice.

This is an extended family migrating, hopefully to California, from the Oklahoma dust bowl in 1938… everything they own in one Model A.

I couldn’t find a photo credit. Dorothea Lange took a lot, but since there are several pictures of this family, supposedly named Hargrove, it might have been someone else.

There were actually signs on some businesses and rest rooms along Rte 66 that said “No Okies” or “Okies move along”.

Hope they made it!

My grandfather went back to rescue his brother and their family. Supposedly, he made the drive without sleeping. He was known for some incredible stunts, so we sort of believed him.

Rook.

There were Rooks where I used to live 30-something years ago. They can be quite noisy in the mornings.
