Chris Van Allsburg is a writer and illustrator of children’s picture books… though they’re for older children, not toddlers.
This is from his first one, from 1979… the best-selling, “The Garden of Abdul Gasazi”, for which he won a Caldecott Honor.
We had another one of his illustrations a week or so ago… a rather darker looking one. He likes to write scary fantasy, which little kids can handle better than me… in fact, as a child, I liked some horror movies too.
For instance, if you’ve ever seen Jumanji, with Robin Williams, it was based on an Allsburg book… it was very popular. Little kids loved it, but it was a bit too scary for me!

I wanted to find the name of that coat, but so far I haven’t.
I did see some discussion of their clothes, and several pictures of similar outfits.
In fact, all the old pics of the men were similarly dressed, but there were fewer women.
What I read on a Reddit forum with Korean commenters was that this was a coat for an upper class woman, and they thought the man, in middle class dress, was showing off his wealth, by buying it for his wife.
It was the end of the Joseon Dynasty, and middle class women didn’t have to cover up this much, but some did, to emulate the upper class.
They wrote the word for the coat, also his hat and shoes, in Korean script.
It has sleeves, but the back of the large neck opening is worn pulled up over the head.
According to my search, it is, in fact, the traffic on Oxford Circus… which they say was then still known as Regent Circus…. in 1888.
But I do question that last bit, because there’s a sign over the window, on the nearest corner, under a wonderful cartouche, a sign which may even have helped you guess…
While partially obscured, it quite clearly says “Oxford Circus”.
There’s a note near the bottom LH corner that probably says ‘Regent Circus’, and I actually thought of dating it to the late 1880’s, but thought it might have been early 1880’s, so I went with late 1800’s 😉
I wondered at first who was the hunter and who the prey… but Google says it’s a nutria chasing away a blue heron.
This photo was an entrant in a Nikon Comedy Wildlife photography contest… my source didn’t say whether it won.
You may want to root for the cute little furry guy… but nutria are considered invasive pests in many states, destroying native animals and crops, and carrying diseases that humans can catch, including tuberculosis.
California asks all sightings to be reported; Louisiana pays a $6 bounty for killing them, and the US Fish and Wildlife service encourages people to eat them!
As a side note… when I was a little kid in Cleveland, the grocery store where my mom shopped…. I think it was Piggly Wiggly, my favorite name for a store… had a big table of pumpkins out front.
We three kids got to fight over... er… I mean choose… the family pumpkin, which my dad carved.
By the time I was in high school, we lived in Wisconsin. We still got a family pumpkin, but usually my Dad let me carve it. The big ones cost ten cents.
Sometimes, with my own money, I also bought a small one for a nickel, cos I liked carving pumpkins.
I didn’t know the price in Cleveland, but it had probably been about the same, 10 years earlier, cos we didn’t have rampant inflation.
When I moved to California, as a college sophomore, I remember saying that things cost more here. One example was that a smallish pumpkin cost a quarter. A quarter! For one little pumpkin!
I thought of that the other day, seeing that pumpkins now cost as much as…. well… as everything else, I suppose.

Whoa, I didn’t even see that faint white writing.. I can barely make it out.
I do think it says Regent Circus.
But it was added to the print, maybe years later…. while the Oxford Circus sign is irrefutably part of the scene.
