Online, I found it for sale, on sites like Etsy, eBay, and FineArt America… claimed to be from different artists or companies with names like Point.inc… as prints, tote bags, pillows and towels.
On Pinterest, someone named Willow Bader says it’s her painting, an encaustic titled The Sound of Black and White, which is only 8 x 11″. It’s been sold, but she has other paintings of hands on piano keys, or she’ll paint you one to order.
Should that say “paint”? She does say it’s in encaustic, not a print… but somehow I still hear little wheels turning.

Other times it’s cryptic. All I found for this one was that it was a lady with “a hoop, a pistol, and tools.”
Kinda took me aback! I hadn’t noticed the pistol; in fact I couldn’t see it… But now I do. It’s hanging from her belt, barrel pointed upwards, which seems weird.
I don’t know what the hoop is for. It’s way thicker than a dress hoop, and is only about ⅔ of a circle.
A comb(?), a rake, a bell, and a load of spoons, besides all the chains, or beads, or whatever she’s draped with.
Must have been following the end of the Second Small Global Disagreement hostilities if bananas are available again. Rationing ended in July 54, but foodstuffs from the Empire would have been available again before that.
I did a new search, which, as usual, found different sources from my first attempt.
According to more than one site, it’s 1946.
And Alamy says “A scene from bethnal green, east london, showing smiling women queueing for the much awaited bananas which have been scarce since the beginning of the second world war. beetroot is also available on this roadside stall.”
I did think, a while later after I posted my comment, that it might have been the first time that seller had bananas for sale again which would explain why he’s got them on the pole so they can be seen, and the crowds.

A friend had bought the set as a gift for a baby shower, and we wanted to know how they folded it into a bear.. but of course, she didn’t want to unfold it to figure out. (If I were the baby’s mother, I wouldn’t have wanted to unfold it even to use it.)
It took us ages, using washcloths she already had, to replicate it, without unfolding or even detaching it from the package….
so I have to tell you, in case you want to try… (And if you don’t want to try, you don’t need to read this 🙂 )

After you roll the two sides to the center, you fold it almost in half, with the leg half a little longer, and put a rubber band around it to make the neck… but as you fold it down, you have to twist it on top of the head, so the arms and legs both face the front… Otherwise the arms will be folded inside, where you can’t see them.
It takes practice! But we finally got it.
Oh… And you have to use something thick, or it’ll be the scrawniest poor little bear ever.
Most of the old style ice cream parlors near here have disappeared, too, so the places that sell ice cream might just have one thing.. like a milk shake with your hamburger, or a small dish of plain ice cream after dinner.
Even the fancy rolled cone place just closed.

Of course, I like them with all chocolate and vanilla ice cream and all chocolate syrup. Probably couldn’t finish one now.

What kind of merchant is this?
Was she supposed to use that derringer to protect that cheap jewelry? Or did they send her into the tougher parts of town?
I feel like it’s more likely to be hardware chain than jewelry… But who knows.
I do know they used chain for making light pulls, toilet pulls (when the flush cabinet was on the wall), dog leashes, and other stuff.

Probably the bananas and beets were all he could get that day.
I do like the sign asking you not to choose certain beetroot… he didn’t have enough time or merchandise to put up with picky customers.
