It’s a type of salamander.called an olm, and lives in flooded caves in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Italy.
It stays in larval form, pale pink, and blind, with external gills for life.
Because cave water has very little food in it, it has adapted to surviving for years without eating, by slowing its metabolism and reabsorbing its own tissue. By barely moving, it can live 100 years.
Slovenia has put the olm on a coin. It is protected, though its habitat is threatened by groundwater pollution.
This is an extended family migrating, hopefully to California, from the Oklahoma dust bowl in 1938… everything they own in one Model A.
I couldn’t find a photo credit. Dorothea Lange took a lot, but since there are several pictures of this family, supposedly named Hargrove, it might have been someone else.
There were actually signs on some businesses and rest rooms along Rte 66 that said “No Okies” or “Okies move along”.
